Single colored artwork for customs looks like crap?

I understand the process that is used to create single colored artwork on customs: They use lasers to etch the image into the shell, then hand paint it, wiping away the excess paint as they go.

But, all the close-up pics I've seen of these don't look particularly great. I have noticed the edges are "pixelated," rather than smooth and fluid. I find it hard to believe a LASER couldn't do a better job and I wonder if people are simply using poor quality images. Perhaps higher resolution pictures produce a better artwork?

Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done to prevent these rough edges? Has anyone used a particularly high resolution image and gotten great results, who wouldn't mind sharing a picture of it?

I have an image that is about 1,000 x 1,000 pixels and 332 KBs (one color) and can get it even larger if needed. I'm wondering if the results will be better than what I've seen.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
