I'm going to test my 4G iPod with some portable amps, but I don't presently have a line-out option and my dock is unavailable.

If I hook up an amp through the headphone out, what is the optimum volume setting on the iPod: 100% or something less?

I didn't know if turning the volume up to 100% introduces distoration or if it is digitally attenuated. Also, I wasn't sure if a 100% volume setting would zap the battery quicker.

Thanks.

I was under this impression as well.

Everything I've read about the iPod (including back to the old 1G which had no docking/line-out) has always referenced 100% as closest to a line level. I haven't done tests (use line out on my 4G, and always used 100% on previous 1G), but it wouldn't surprise me that there's a difference between players. 100% volume will greatly distort with iTrip, but not headphone to amp.
