Simple, Cheap, Programmable DIY Robotics suggestions?

I'm looking at an Arduino or Netduino board, maybe some RC car servos and Kinects?  I don't really know what's out there or what to search for.
 
The goal is to experiment with book scanning.  Hopefully a crude form of this.
