Hi !

I really liked the K501 at the Toronto meet and these might be my next purchase. However, is there an older model that is considered similar but better than these for around $90-140. Maybe like the K401 ? K400 ? K500 ? Wich one should I pick ?

BTW I really disliked the K701. Should I go for the Sextetts ?

What did you not like about the k701? You should get a sextet if you see one for sale anyways, but I can bet money that Fitz will beat you to it. Honestly you are looking at 2 headphones that are very very hard to get.

Have you tried Audio Technicas at all? And what about k240m? Its not a sextet, does not sound like one, but it definitely is a cool phone.

Haha interesting. Well returning to your original post. I am under impression that some of the cans AKG made in 80s happen to be some of the best headphones around - specifically k240 sextet, k240m, and k340. First is hard to acquire, last is more expensive and requires modding to shine, not talking about beefy amplification (although an amp that works very amazingly with it can be had for $200, produced a world-class setup). k240m is neutral, and fairly easy to drive for a 600 ohm phone, but not with a large soundstage. Very good detail and soundstage integration, especially for a $100 phone, comfortable. I have been using it for a while as a temporary phone, and if I was on a budget, I'd just stay with k240m. One of the best qualities of k240m I think is that its forgiving to poor sources, because it still has nice detail extraction, and fairly balanced sound.

Either one is worth a try, but if you liked k501, put a WTB up.

Just curious, have you tried the k601?

Just like you I tried the k701 and didn't like it, but I love the k601's!
A lot of people seem to be under the impression that the k601 is just a "baby brother" version of the k701 - a cheaper copy. It's not though, it has its own unique sound signature. The k601 adds warmth while retaining much of the soundstage and detail AKG's are known for. Maybe it's worth auditioning for you.
It's a little out the price range you mentioned (I think about $180 at NS&L), but I figured since you mentioned the 701's...

The K401 is similar to the K501 but better overall in my opinion, but it is harder to find than the K501. The K500 is very similar to the K501 though, moreso than the K401.

And yes, every Head-Fier should own a K240 sextett, so you should get one too.
