Currently have a pair of Shure SRH840's. They need to be sent back and replaced under shures warranty and I was thinking about selling them as new.

I was wondering if it was a good idea to get the dt770 with the money. It's not that i don't like the 840's, but I would like to try something different.

What can you guys tell me about how the 770's sound in comparison to the shures?

Hello!

THe DT770pro-80 is more robust and more comfortable. It shares some of the 840's harshness but more so and at higher frequencies. To me the 770 mids are way too far back/recessed. Their reputation as bass monsters I don't understand but the bass can be much more flabby than the 840s without a pretty serious amp.

For me between those two, I would keep the 840s without much hesitation but I would consider more options - there are lots - in this type/price range, if the 840s are not floating your boat.

Best

PS did the exposed cable above the 840 housing break or was it something else?

Thanks for the reply.

Nope..it was actually the headphone cable going into the headphone. It causes the audio to crackle if the cable is moved slightly. Kind of annoying.

What others in this price range (£130-170) would you recommend?

Hello. In that approx price range for studio closed cans (are you in the UK?), I can also recommend from my collection

Beyer DT250-250 (£125)
Shure SRH 940 (£165)
Beyer DT150 (with a little reservation) (£125)
Senn HD25-1 (£140)

If I was in the market, I'd also be looking at the following - all below £170 in the UK, mainly below £140
AKG K271
Audio Technica M50
German Maestro 8.35
Fischer Audio 003 (?)
KRK 8400
Senn HD380

In the UK, a good supplier is DV247.com

If I had to go with one all-rounder that will do portable brilliantly too, it would be the HD25-1, but get a copper cable to replace the steel stock version.

Best
