Shure SRH1540 Review

Jul 7, 2022 at 1:21 PM Post #2,521 of 2,715
They arrived and I’ve been using them with the fiio m17. They love the power it gives them. These are really good headphones. Perfect for my work days. I’ll get them a balanced cable. Any recommendations?

I have gone with Forza Audio Works for several of my headphones. They seem to be high performance at a reasonable price.

However, I recently have has a good experience with Openheart cables from Aliexpress. I bought a set of pure silver cables and they sound fantastic - at about a quarter of the cost of the Forzas.

Keep in mind that you will need to bore out the opening for the 1540's mmcx connectors - they are too small for any mmcx barrels to fit into (that I have found).

Good luck - it is worth the effort!

Surf Cables or LQI Cables fit with no modification.

"Mid-Fi" seems to be really fitting.
They are fun headphones, nice to listen to with a broad Spectrum of Genres.

I bought mine ages ago and have really fond memories of them.
Since then I Upgraded a few Times and by now I am in a much bigger league with my Hifiman Arya.

The quality Jump is so huge, that I couldnt enjoy the Shure1540 any more.

For their pricerange they are great tho.
I like SRH1540 headphones better than Meze Empyrean. I suppose sound is near 100% subjective. I also like SRH1540 better than AKG K812 and AKG K872.

I like SRH1840 headphones better than HD600 but I don't think it can not on the same level with Meze Empyrean.
I actually prefer my SRH1540 over SRH1840. I am sure many prefer Meze Empyrean, but my ears just love SRH1540 for some reason. I listen to SRH1840 only occasionally.

I've had my eye on these for a long, long time. I finally just bought some and I'm listening now. I've tried to get it to distort but I guess I'm not keyed in enough to hear it. Perhaps it's my choice of music (mostly 60's pop), not sure. I'm running it through an Apogee Duet 3 and have also tried it through my iMac.

If I were going to EQ for the flattest response, what would I need to tweak? I have an app (eqMac) on my Mac.

So, on my mission to get a cheap balanced cable for this headphone, I finally solved it by building a sort of proof-of-concept modular headphone cable.

Last month, I bought this cheap 4-pin XLR to 2x A2DC balanced cable, because the A2DC connectors look so similar to the connectors used by the 1540. Turns out they are very similar, even looking at them in person, but they're not interchangeable. I then decided that I would mod the cable to work with the 1540.

But then thinking more on it, and looking at all the other headphones I have that require unusual connectors and are thus difficult/expensive to get balanced cables for, I started devising a kind of modular headphone cable. For a proof of concept, I took the cable linked above, removed the A2DC connectors, and replaced them with 3.5mm female connectors. Then all I needed to do was make a pair of foot-long-or-so cables that are 3.5mm male on one end and Shure 1540 MMCX connectors on the other.

20220710_155323.jpg
That's what I ended up with. A 4-pin-XLR-to-dual-3.5mm-female cable, plus a pair of 3.5mm-male-to-unique-MMCX cables.

Put it all together, and:
20220710_155501.jpg

The two pigtails can pretty much just stay connected to the 1540 now, because I don't have any other headphone that needs them. But I've also made a pair of pigtails for my E-Mu Teak and my 1More H1707, and those are working great, too.

So hooray, now I have one balanced cable that can work with basically any dual-entry headphone.

In the future, I'm going to design something a bit more finished-looking, some sort of small, 3D-printed bead with one 4-pin Mini-XLR input and two 3-pin Mini-XLR outputs. That way both ends of the cable can be modular depending on what combination of amp+headphone I want to listen to. But hey, for a quick and dirty proof of concept, I'm lovin' it. Now I can finally get to know this headphone properly.

Ordered a pair to complement my Stax L500mk2s. I chose these because of their build quality and comfort. I am hoping the sound will be thicker / less airy and more forgiving than my estats. I envision using the 1540s for more "relaxed" listening and general purpose use (which I've used the wh-1000xm4s for thus far), while I bring the Stax out for more engaged listening. Specifically I want the Shures to be good allrounders, but especially do well with metal, hip hop and more contemporary music like chart pop etc.

I will report back once I receive them.

Well, I've had them for around 1,5 hours now. They arrived before the Fiio E10K dac I plan to drive them off (both bought used). Thus, I am running them straight out of my desktop computer. No external dac or amping!

Firstly, they are very comfortable. I should mention these have dekoni choice leather pads on them, not the stock ones. I can tell the padding on the headband is a bit thin, which starts being slightly annoying as I write this, so I might need to mod them for that down the line. The overall fit of the headphones however are superb. Very comfortable indeed.

Secondly, holy cow these definitely run great out of the laptop. I am at 30% in windows (max in Roon) and its plenty loud. Had I known this before purchasing, I probably wouldn't have bothered with the Fiio E10K.

So, onto the sound. These are as I said simply initial impressions. I am very aware of new toy syndrome, and something I want to be keenly aware of as I listen. I haven't listened to other headphones than the L500mk2 and sony mx4s in a long, long time. I can roughly remember how my previous headphones have sounded. I saw people say these are comparable to the HD600, but in closed version, which is something I would be very happy with indeed.

The first impression that hit me after listening to a couple of songs from the genres hiphop, pop, metal and prog rock, is that they really do remind me of speakers. I can't remember a pair of headphones they really remind me of. It sort of feels like a mesh of the Denon AH-D5/7K and the HD600. It has more and better bass than the HD600s, but which feels tighter than the one in the Denons. You could say the bass feels somewhere between the Denons and the Fostex TH900 (which is a few notches above the Shures). What I really love though, is that the sound is clearly without any hint of fatigue. That was important for me, and these headphones deliver. I also think I might've had too low expectations - the detail retrieval and overall fidelity of these cans are a good few notches above what I was expecting. In fact I would say they are at least on the level of HD600s if not better. Same goes for TH900s/Denon 5/7Ks and LCDs. It is definitely a big step up in terms of detail and airyness to estats, however at this level the details doesn't really matter that much to me. Big thumbs up from me.

Soundstage is OK. Not terribly important to me, but its certaintly servicable, especially considering these are closed headphones. I'm very impressed by the imaging. I like it a lot.

I have one "complaint" out of the gate. Well, its not really a complaint, but I can definitely understand people turning away from this headphone because of this. The bass is too much on some tracks. On others, its just enough. When I got into this hobby, I was a massive bass head, always chasing the heaviest bass. I realized that I was never going to be satisfied with headphones for bass (although the D5Ks and TH900s came close). Since then I've been more into clarity and "neutrality". But I've always been missing that hit of bass for certain genres. These cans do deliver a good bass punch for those genres, however especially on some pop tracks the bass overpowers the track a bit, creating a "boom" effect that feels entirely seperated from the overall sound. It really doesn't bother me, however for someone who was to own these headphones as true reference headphones, I can understand how they'd take issue with it.

As I said, these are impressions after a very short while of listening, with no external dac or amping. So we'll see if my opinion differs once I get it properly amped up. I'm definitely very happy with it as of right now.

The bass cleans up and it becomes a more balanced headphone with a little more power. I drive mine balanced from a Sony NW-WM1Z and Lotoo Paw Gold Touch and it's a dream. The zip lock HD280 pad takes care of the headband issue. To give you an idea how much I love them, I prefer them to the Meze Empyrean.

My experience has indeed been that amping matters the most for bass response. So I hope you are right. But I'm not sure I want that either - maybe the estat rig will be collecting dust? :)

That mod looks really awesome. I'm a bit on the fence if I need it as of now, but I'm getting a haircut in a couple of days and I wouldn't be surprised if the headband becomes more of an issue then!

The SRH1540 headphones do the absolute best with the Gen 1 Sony DAPs. They are crazy good with the NW-WM1Z in particular. I really enjoy the open back SRH1840 from the LPGT near exclusively.

You should try them with stock pads.

Bruh.

I tried throwing on the original pads. I didn't really want to because they are kinda nasty and has a slightly displeasant odor to them. But it did indeed sort out the bass issue. In fact I would say the cans sound more open/less congested, a bit flatter. So thank you very much for this suggestion. I do have a pair of dekoni suede, but I guess they'll equally mess with the sound as the leather ones.

You can get the HPAEC1540 pads from Amazon for $40. I stocked up on those.
