Hi everyone,

Just wondering if I can get some opinions on this choice. My E2Cs have seen their last days, and I want to move up a couple notches. I've spent a lot of time researching (much of it on this site) and I think I want to stay with Shure. As far as new products go, that means probably the SE310 (although I could be convinced to go up to the 420 if someone feels strongly about the dual drivers). That said, in doing all this research I've heard lots and lots of warm references to the older E4Cs. They're priced extremely low on amazon now ($165 vs $250 for the 310s), so it seems like that may be the better value. I'd welcome people's thoughts on the matter.

Thanks,
Joel

I have not listened to either IEM, but the E4c/SCL4 does not have that huge, heavy Y-splitter with the 3.5mm stereo plug.

This "modular cord IEM" thing really, really, really needs to STOP. It's not helpful. The cords end up either too short or too long and they're always too heavy.

A four-foot, lightweight cord is fine.

i like the modular cord thing

If anything, i'd say a shorter cord leading up to the phones. That way we iPhone users using a mic can get it closer to our mouths

I have/had both. The SE310 has slightly heavier bass, but the E4C has a bigger soundstage and is airier.

So it's up to you

Good luck!

heard both, have se310.

think the se310 have a little better bass than the e4c or scl4. but i don't quite agree e4c has a bigger soundstage. it might be the gray silicon tiips that come with the e4 make its soundstage seems bigger. But i think se310 have a better instrument separation.

overall se310 is a hair better than the e4. but i guess e4 would be a better buy on $170 than $250.

Se420 is not a very good buy IMHO. if you really want the best, i'll say go for the se530 or um2 (um2 would cost just about the same as se310)

AlsoI have compared SE310 and E4G.

I'd like to suggest SE310, owing to SE310 has got wider soundstage and SE310 has got the faster reaction and clearity.

E4G only specialised on the female vocal sound, other sounds such as the guitar sound not too good.

I love SE310 more than E4G.

I had both at one time.

The SE310 has more recessed mids and heavier bass in comparison to the E4C. However, the bass is not as clear, but by no means inaccurate.

The E4C's really shine in their mids. I honestly feel they possess the most pronounced mid-frequency sound of ANY shure phone, and make guitar distortion especially shine.

All in all, I like the E4C's more BUT I'll use the SE310's more often. The 310's are more of a "fun" earphone, but nothing beats the killer mid detail of the E4C's when it comes to rock.
