I cannot recommend enough using a balanced cable with the HD800.  I've opted for the Sennheiser CH800.  The difference was dramatic and astounding.

What amps? Balanced shouldn't make a difference.

Using the SE output and balanced are almost always going to yield different results, if the amp is meant for balanced output, it'll sound better through balanced. That's a design point of your amp, nothing to do with just getting a balanced cable :).

It would be nice if we could objectively measure the difference. Sometimes the placebo effect is quite evident given the advertising hype. In the end, of course, what matters most is how satisfied we are with the sound we are getting!

The stock cable can be brought from around £180 and £250 depending on where you can find it, I Tried a few upgrades The best being from Norne audio , But it cost around £700 ,, Was it worth it .. I think so . But then again is paying £2000 for an amp And £100s for for interconnects ,, Again I believe So , If its What you're into Why not invest , Its all relevant and you judge the value from the hours of use you get out of These things , Example ..Over A thousand pounds for a season Ticket for a top premier league club ,, I know where my money would go

There are several suppliers of good quality audio cables , Norne Audio , Moon audio , If you're in Europe Forza audio works . I have brought cables from them all and they all do great quality cables , Do your research then try one and judge for yourself

I have been nothing but thrilled with the sound from my HD 800's, but I recently came across a Six Moons review that flat-out ridicules the stock cable. Quoth the reviewer: "Stock cables aren't up to par. They must be replaced or any true discussion on performance is invalid."

Really?! Were these headphones actually *held back* this whole time? That's a frightening thought.

Is there any truth to this? To be honest, I've ran some searches, and I'm not even sure what that type of cable is called, the kind that are interchangeable like that. Where do I find them? Which are best for the model in question?

Advice appreciated; thanks for reading.

I think a better cable could help minimally help with audio. But what does make a difference is XLR, but that's a different beast in itself. Updating 1/4 or 3.5 won't yield as much.

Only reason you should upgrade in that case is if it's for comfort/look/weight. Otherwise high overpriced cables is probably more than not just snake oil.

XLR vs SE generally shouldn't make a difference on comparable well designed amps, unless you're going over long cable lengths.
