Hello all,

I own the Sennheiser HD 600 and absolutely love it. I play mostly flac files from my pc to  Marantz HD DAC1 through the usb dac mode. Its an absolute bliss.
Today I received the Beyerdynamic DT 880s 600 ohm edition. I was busy testing HD 600s and DT 880s with all my favorite songs and I would never say it is a bad headphone but somehow I find it uncomfortable to listen to. Maybe its the treble peak?

Also, I have ordered a used pair of HD 800 (yay!) but I have read that it is a bright headphone too (no yay :frowning2: ) now I'm afraid that I will hate the HD 800s too.

So basically I have two questions.
1. Will DT 880s smoothen if I give in say 100 hours of burn in?
2. Is the HD 800s more brighter than the DT880s?

Honestly, HD 600s are stopping me from buying any more headphones :D

Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

The DT880 are considered a bright sounding headphone.
I own a well used DT880 Premium 600-Ohm and it is a touch on the bright side.
Assuming that currently in general you prefer the sound of the HD600 to the HD880, I doubt the DT880 will have any big improvements (after 100 hour break in) that would make you like them any better then the HD600.
Suggest you return the DT880.

Thank you. How about the HD 800s? are they bright as well? comparing to the DT 880s?

Have no idea on how the HD800 is in comparison to other headphones.
You might try reading up and asking on this thread.

Hello,

If you are used to HD600 is pretty straight forward that you'll find DT880 a tad too bright.
If you can use (only) DT880 for 10-20hs or so, then go back to HD600 that would be better for the sake of comparison.
A/B when your ears are very accoustumed to one of the headphones is not that useful in my experience.
That's why reviewers normally listen to a headphone for a week (exclusively) before writing about it.
One more thing to consider is that DT880 shine with different recordings than HD600, all in all the HD600 is more of an all-rounder.
The Beyer might rule out most average recordings that still sound ok through the Senn HD600.
With top class stuff DT880's airier and more neutral presentation takes the edge over the (already nice) HD600.

HD800 is drier than DT880, more clinical.
It's brighter in the 6kHz region, but it's darker in the 8kHz region.
The result is a brighter presentation, sometimes steely at first listen, but not as sharp as DT880.

HD800 is closer to DT880 than it is to HD600.

Most people I know that went from HD600 to HE-560 are happy with the upgrade.

My DT880 250 ohm definitely improved sound-wise after a week or so of use, but they are still a bit bright (which I like). I would give them a little more listening time if you can.

Thank you guys. Yes, comparing a new headphone without extensive listening isn't fair.
I'm listening to it all day now and I somehow like the vocals on 600s. I will spend a week with these headphones.

Do you see a point in keeping 3 headphones? HD600s, DT880s and the HD800s (which I will receive in a week).

Honestly, not really even tho hd600 and dt880 might be just different enough to warrant keeping them both, BUT I've found myself to be a lot happier now that I own only 1 pair of headphones (dt880) as there's no reason for me to constantly switch between different headphones and compare and analyse everything all the god damn time. Not only that but my mind is now completely and utterly accustomed to one headphone that I use all the time and it sounds pretty much perfect. Well as close as it gets to perfection because dt880 can be a bit too bright on occasion but I don't find it peaky and unpleasant like dt770/dt990.

Might as well just keep one headphone.

I got the HD 800s today. Oh my God!!! It sounds spectacular, full sounding, spacious, out of the world, amazing :)
I think the treble is sharp but not sharp/uncomfortable as the DT880s. Now I want to try some Audezes :D
