I encode all of my music on my 10&30 GB iPod at 320kps AAC and it's almost indisguishable from the original source. In my opinion with some recorded music it's a waste of time and may prove to be worse encoding at higher rates, since there isn't much in the original recording to start with.
Which brings me to this; the easiest and most affordable way to upgrade your listening enjoyment is by improving your recorded music library. No fancy "magic wire" Super Cans, wonder tubes or intricate circuit amp can get out of a recording what was never there! You guys are killing the messenger while ignoring the message. The true source is the recording and not the vechicle which transports it.
