Should I attempt to return new Plantronics Backbeat Pros and either exchange or purchase from different source?

After reading many reviews, I settled on getting myself my first pair of wireless noise-cancelling bluetooth headphones and a pair of Plantronics Backbeat Pros arrived from Amazon today.

Consistent with reviews, music sounded as good as other reviewers have noted, save that there were occasional clicks and drops.
Telephone sounded bad. The persons talking to me said I sounded like I must be sick or hoarse. When I changed to either speaking directly from my phone or from a cheap pair of 66 Audio BT sport headphones ($30), they said I sounded normal.

The persons I heard through the Backbeat Pros not only sounded distant and canned, but there were frequent tics of static. Updating firmware fixed none of this. Again when I switched to playing the phone conversation with cheap 66 Audio BT headphones, all static went away and people sounded normal.

I have seen at least one review on Amazon mentioning that some units are defective. They say that this is to be handled with exchanges..

Two questions
1) Is it worth it to simply exchange and pray for a non-defective unit will come back?

2) What exactly is the way to Exchange on Amazon? I can print out a "Return", but there is not actually an "exchange" checkbox option. It sounds like I just have to buy it again. Is that right?

I noticed that Amazon fulfilled the order from a source they called "Buy Wholesale Prices". Since the item came with firmware that was old (version 25 while current is 27), I kind of thought "gee maybe this outfit got itself a batch of old defective units".

But what do I do?
Order a new one from Amazon and hope that it's better?

Order from a different online source that might be working with newer stock?
Send a note to Amazon and say "hey, can you fulfill from a different outfit, other than Buy Wholesale Prices?
Send a note to "Buy Wholesale Prices" company and say "hey, can you try to get a replacement from a different batch"

Anyway, please advice

It doesn't sound like you have Amazon Prime, but if you go with the "defective" route I'm pretty sure they'll replace it for free. You may have to send it back first whereas Prime members get a new one ASAP and 30 days to return the defective unit. If you're unsure about all of this go to the Help section and choose Returns and you can navigate your way to a phone number or online chat. Amazon customer support is fantastic and they'll usually side with you.
