Of all the companies that could contact me about a job...I received this email from Bose:

------------------------------------------------
Dear Michael,

Bose Corporation is the world's premier consumer home entertainment and automotive electronics developer. We are currently searching nation-wide, in order to find Hardware Engineers for our Home Entertainment Division team, located at our Corporate Headquarters in Framingham MA (just west of Boston; relocation assistance is available).

Bose Hires Engineers with a Passion for Engineering: Bose is very proud of the fact that we hire engineers with intellect, vision and passion. Our best engineers often show a lifelong pattern of engineering curiosity. Remember that kid who used their first screwdriver to take things apart, just to see how something worked? The odds are good that when he or she grew up and got their BSEE that they ended up working for Bose! It's one thing to be able to draw a circuit, and something else altogether to understand how it works. If you truly understand your work-at a level well beyond the ordinary Electrical Engineer-you're the kind of engineer we're looking for at Bose. You can choose to work alone or on a team, depending on your preference. In addition to the time you spend on analysis, we'll expect you to get your hands dirty in the lab, too. Most of your time will be spent on new product introductions, typically with aggressive timetables. You'll get to see the project through from start to finish and from top to bottom. And while you're working, you'll have an opportunity to learn from the other engineers on your team.

The bottom line is that our engineers are very bright people. This 'brightness' is evidenced not just by the quality of the schools they've attended, or by Math SAT scores in the high 600's to 700-something range. Most importantly their 'brightness' is demonstrated by the special things that each engineer has done that show us their own unique 'Evidence of Excellence' in their education, career or personal life. We would love to hear about your 'Evidence of Excellence', and to learn more about why a career at Bose excites you!

Bose Develops Many Well-Known Products, and much more... Bose is a leader in the design of Automotive Sound Systems (one in ten cars has sound by Bose), Home Entertainment Electronics as well as products for Musicians, Pilots and the Military. In addition we conduct extensive research in many leading edge technical areas that might surprise you, such as our novel automotive suspension system. (You can read more about it, and our founder, Dr. Amar Bose here).

Bose Responsibilities and Requirements for Hardware Design Engineers: You'll be responsible for working in a group which performs advanced development and does system architecture of Bose home entertainment products. You will be expected to explore new technologies and product concepts and will architect products such as the Lifestyle music system and Wave products. Ideally you'll have knowledge of how CD, DVD and music storage products are engineered. The Home Entertainment Division is comprised of engineers who have a detailed understanding of hardware engineering and systems with embedded software. You should have experience as a designer of systems with analog, digital, and embedded software content. Here's the specifics of what we need to see in your work experience:

· BS or MS in Electrical Engineering required.
· Strong Analog hardware design experience in one or more of the following areas:
o Discrete component, board level Analog design
o Mixed Signal IC Design
o Power Supply Design (linear or switch-mode)
o Audio Amplifier Design
o Audio/Video Matrix Switches
o AM/FM/DAB Radio Design
o Frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) Design
o Display Design (LCD, LED)
o Infrared Design
o RF Design (24MHz to5.8GHz)
· Familiarity with Analog design and simulation tools such as SPICE or APLAC
· Solid Digital hardware design experience, sufficient to complement analog skills. Digital skills should include at least one of:
o Microprocessor-based Embedded Systems Design
o FPGA Design
o Hardware Design which indicates your knowledge of how CD, DVD and music storage products are engineered
· Knowledge of high volume, consumer electronics product development is preferred but not a hard requirement
· Experience with the design of products for EMI, UL, FCC or CSA compliance is preferred but not a hard requirement

If you meet these requirements, we want to hear from you. Please reply to this email with a Word version of your resume. Please include information about your current salary, and if needed, confirm your interest in relocating to the Boston area. You can also directly contact the Bose Recruiter supporting this effort by calling 508-766-9129.

The Bose Business Case: Bose is one of the world's largest and most successful privately held companies. As a result, Bose can set its own priorities, without many of the constraints often felt by public companies. Bose is able to make, and then maintain, long term commitments to engineering projects that the company values. Our Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones are a perfect example. Long before today's ubiquitous iPods, Walkmans, or cell phones our founder Dr. Amar Bose developed the initial noise cancellation algorithms (after a not-so-pleasant long distance flight). But broad market appeal for the product just didn't exist at the time. Over the course of many years, Bose engineers continued to refine the design. Most companies would have abandoned the sophisticated project. But Bose's patience and vision were rewarded with a dramatically successful product, now sold online, in retail stores, and in airports around the world. The headphones have been so successful that currently, kiosks at just one major US airport generate nearly $100,000 in sales every day!

^ They are really trying to butter-up the tri-ports here, but I'm honestly tempted to look into this more. Aside from consumer-level audio, Bose has a decent history of innovation and design. I'm a recent BSEE grad, but I have experience with many of the topics they listed. Perhaps the tri-ports could use a little touch of head-fi? What do you guys think? Should I go for it?

They may not make the best electronics, but it sounds like a company that treats it's employees well. You might end up helping produce products that really live up to great quality, and not just a premium price from a premium name.

Ah, go for it. If you don't like it or find you hate it you could try to find a new job. What would be terrible would to have to work sales for bose products when you know there are better products available. Yeach!

By all means GO FOR it!!! Say what you want about Bose.... they are a consumer marketing monster. It'd be a great learning experience IMHO.
