.....can i fix this relatively easy? Send them to Sony?

I listen to them alot so I would really like to get them fixed.

Sounds like there is a short... If you are hand at all or have soldered before just pick up a new 1/4" plug and try a shot... or you could send it to Sony... See what they say for a turnaround.

....I can see where the gold plug meets the silver in color metal outer part of the plug. I wonder is these pull apart or if the screw apart or are they permanently attached?
