Hello
I hesitated for a long time before buying the SHANLING ME 800.
At least 3 reasons for this:
- The very rare feedback or tests on the Web
- The mixed reviews of buyers on His Video
- Already owning the Sony IER M9 and the Sennheiser IE 900, (both excellent), was this a useful purchase?
I had to make a “mix” of all this information! assimilate them and make the right choice.
But here it is… I had the SHANLING ME 700s for almost a year that I used with the DAP Shanling Pro (21) and I was delighted with this combo, yes really fully satisfied.
Without really knowing, probably on impulse, I sold this combo and took the Sennheiser IE 900 then the Shanling M9 (these 2 together are very very good).
After a few re-readings of the tests and reviews, I ordered the SHANLING ME 800 on this site a few short weeks ago.
Upon receipt, and from the first moments of listening, a problem with the original Furukawa cable (poor contact and loss of sound on the right side, I did not have this problem at all when plugging in my other cables), and liaison with the Sound Video service, overall return of the product to their services, then in turn total replacement of the package (moreover very good and complete for this one, other brands should be inspired by it), all took about a good week, so nothing to complain about the Sound Video service, it was at the Top.
After this long introduction, and about 150 hours of use with the Shanling M9 DAP, or the Sony TA-ZH1ES amp/dac and in ''comparison'' with the Sony IER M9 (5 BA) IEMs and the Sennheiser IE 900 (1 DD), I would say it's a middle ground, both musically and technically, especially since it's a 2 DD + 4 BA hybrid design.
(If break-in there is, and on comparison with the same pieces or extracts from 0 to 150 hours of use, yes I think there has been a small change, at least in certain aspects)
I use them with the original cable (all copper), but also with an Eros S (2022) from Effect audio (copper and silver wire), in both cases it's all good, maybe I have I have a small preference with the Eros S.
So yes, the SHANLING ME 800 are not ''basseux'', at least in the term, it is also my opinion, now, from there to say that there is no bass, let's not exaggerate no more.
- The Sennheiser IE 900 has more seating in this sense, which brings an organic side to fun and very pleasant listening.
- The SHANLING ME 800 is undeniably more revealing and very detailed. Very nice and also organic listened according to the recordings, but doesn't have as much of that little ''+'' aspect in the bottom as the IE900, even with its small settings (Balanced, Warm, Vocal or Clear) that I feel with the Sennheiser.
Finally, all of this is also “relativized” and often depends (I repeat) on the music listened to, its mixing and recording qualities, therefore the quality of the music files, whatever the style.
The Balanced, Warm, Vocal or Clear settings are audible and will allow everyone to subtly refine the setting to their liking. (For my part, I have not yet stabilized in a specific choice, and continue my research in this direction as I listen,).
For example, when listening to the bass sound that opens the track Ella, album Folkesange by the Myrkur Group, you can perfectly feel a slight enhancement of this bass, going from the basic Balanced setting to the Clear mode.
(Grand Orgue music is also revealing for the bass), currently it is the Clear mode that I use the most with the original blue tips.
Shanling's favorite mode is the Vocal setting.
Important point that emerges (and that I confirm) from the various tests found, the Shanling ME 800 seems to behave best with very good portable players with a good dose of power like the M9, or the M6 Pro (21) of the brand, rather than the previous generation. So a "bad" association may be the cause of the not very encouraging negative opinions (?), nevertheless by connecting it to a Sony ZX300 DAP, it's all good too. (High Gain used)
In conclusion, I really appreciate (with now nearly 200 hours of use) these Shanling ME 800, they have a lively and dynamic sound and really very detailed, without any aggressiveness, beautiful mids, overall sound well balanced and not tiring , a beautiful imagery, but which will not let the bass eat everything, and it hits when it has to hit.
For comfort, I have no problem and can easily use them for long sessions.
So, with my 3 intras with a ''different'' rendering that I choose for listening according to my mood and activity at the time, and in the end with a price almost half for the ME800 compared to the 2 others, it deserves be taken into consideration, but at the cost of a good association and good files well recorded as always and this remains valid with any helmet or earphones.
