Shanling M5 Impressions & Discussion Thread

I think I got my message mixed. I just meant that because FiiO's new portable DAC sounds so good on paper, I might be convinced to get a DAP that maybe isn't AS nice as the Shanling because I can always use it as a transport when at work or somewhere I can appreciate a better output. Also that would help me save a few bucks. Either way, I'm still hoping the Cayin N3 steps up and delivers something great because options are always a good thing for consumers.

I think I got confused, actually. I was confusing the Q5 with that weird non-amped DAP / transport thing FiiO was thinking of making.

In your case, I'd go for something more like Cayin N3, Hidisz AP60, or Shanling M1 + portable DAC, then...

Perfect example. The reason that you have 300mW into 32 Ohms per side is so that the cannons on Tosca - Largo Religioso Sostenuto Molto, from the Telarc Kunzel/Puccini don't break up.

My M5 died. I love the sound but I don't know if I'll replace it with another considering how quickly it died and how little the warranty apparently matters. How's the Cayin N5 sound compared to the M5? I don't like bright sound balance- I prefer dead neutral or warmish with slightly forward vocals. I like that the N5 also uses the AKM4490 DAC chip, but implementation matters.

Dear PopZeus,

Could you please describe the problem? We are willing to help. How it dies and did you tried to recharge/reset/reboot?

Thanks.

Dear Judge584,

Please confirm:
1. If you are already updated to the latest firmware
2. If you card is in FAT32
3. And when you meet crashing? During playback, or standby, or else? We need you feedback to improve.

Thanks.

Weirdest thing happened. After NOT turning on after ~24 hours of charging and being left alone for a period of time, I tried to turn it on and it worked. I don't understand this temperamental tech but I'm glad I don't have to replace it! So happy to have my M5 back (listening to it right now)-- I just want to know how to make sure it performs optimally.

How did it die ?
Mine is still ok, but it crash a lot :frowning2:

When it happens, my M5 is fully unresponsive with a black screen.

To bring it back to life, I have each time to press 10-15sec on the power button, release it, then press it again a few seconds until it starts.

Hope this is only a firmware bug...

PS: already tried a factory reset and even with different SD cards with no success.

Quick update:

I was walking home and bumped the M5 while putting my hand in my pocket just like I did before and it shut off. Then I did what @Judge584 suggested and it turned back on again!

So, the issue is not as dire as it was, fer sure, but it is a really annoying problem. Likely a firmware issue? Tbh, the scroll wheel jutting out the corner of the M5 is an ergonomic fumble just in terms of real world use. Scroll wheels in general might work better when they're flush against the surface on most pocketable devices, ultimately. Whenever it is in my pants or coat pocket, and the slightest bit of pressure is applied in that area, the scroll wheel either changes the volume, pauses the music or just shuts the DAP down, apparently.

Yeah, I should probably change that. Hahaha. Thanks!

I would rather be able to use the controls without having to turn the screen on but it's not that big of a deal to shut them off and leaving it on isn't quite working for me.

As a start, just reset the box. The only thing you'd be losing is the music database and some personal settings. This is not a TTL device, It's actually running on a program, and just a one-bit corruption can cause issues when you hit that code path - just reset it.
