Setting up EQs and Volumes

Sorry all I hadn't checked back to this thread in a while, some great info, thanks!  So, am I right in thinking that it's generally best to attenuate then boost, but if you have to boost, lower the preamp by as many dB as boosted?

So say for example, I boost 16k by 5.2dB, I should set my preAmp to -5.2dB to avoid clipping?

Yeah, that's the basic idea.

Yes that is the idea, but when you are comparing eq to no eq then you are lowering your preamp far too much.  Once you have decided on a setting then yes you should set your preamp to -5.2.  But you will notice that when cutting 5.2 off your preamp that the general sound is quieter than it was without any eq.
