I have the px100 right now and they sound great, but I was wondering if e3s sound much better I only had the 100's for over a week so I can return them if the e3's are better.

I think if you like the bass of the PX-100's, the E3's will be utterly disappointing. I can attest that I had the PX100's, and bought the E3's right after. I sold the E3's.

Nope. Even a cheaper headphone than the PX 100 (like the KSC 75) will sound better than the e3c. Get the e3c only if you are listening in a noisy environment.

the e2c will probably be closer to the px100 sound... that is... DARK. although, it seems the drivers for the new px100 are different from the old px100 (which is what i have)... so i'm not really sure anymore.

i really enjoy the px100 as a toss-around can, although they're a little too dark and boomy for my tastes. i think for the money, the e2c are good... but in that general price range i prefer the ety er6i. more detail, less boomy but still workable bass.

They don't sound better than the E3c, and not even close. They do have a much more musical sound, but the bass is not anywhere as tight nor as detailed as that of the E3s, and especially the midrange is not even close to the quality of midrange the E3's produce. On the treble the E3's is rolled off, yet all the treble is also more detailed. The decay and especially the timbre of the shure's is also much more accurate. Clarity-wize the E3's are far more clear.

If looking for a fun sound the PX100s are much more fun than the e3, but sound quality-wize not even close. Midrange alone the even the e2c I tried at digital, I think beats Px100 midrange. Directly listening to the PX100s and the E3c, the E3 is the better phone.

I reccomend you go for a dual drive as it should give both a better and a more fun sound.

The PX100 are really a mean little monster.

If you're game for a little mod, try this and i'm gonna stick my neck out and say that it is as detailed as a ER6i or maybe even more. SQ wise, you can read in the thread.

Edit:
And i'm gonna say that it is also better than a HD497. I've a MS1 on the way and i hope that it will be better than the modded PXs.

Warning:

All those upper treble (which i don't hear on a ER6i) hidden behind those stock pads are gonna be unleash and assult your ears.

It will sound like a different px100.

My only concern is dust and dirt getting into the drivers. Once damaged, oh oh.....they don't make px100s (new ones sound different?) like this anymore.

oh, did you cut the hole in the HD414 pads? i was just going to go with Steve999's version, and leave the pads uncut.

i read one post that said the original px100 drivers are copper clad, the new ones are aluminum.. i have no idea if that's true.

p.s. sorry to hijack thread! back to our scheduled programming.

Yup, i did Lisa's version as the pads are more stable on the px100. I have to find some thin piece of foam/cloth/stockings to cover them. According to 'that thread' its true according to Senn's email.

Ok, back to topic. Instead of the e3, maybe you will like to include the ER6i or new UM1 (similar to e3 but with more bass) into your considerations. If you insist on Shures, go for the e4 and you'll be in another league.
