Sennheiser MX400 Appreciation Thread

My iRiver SlimX iMP-550 included the Sennheiser MX 400-RC, which is explained on Sennheiser's website as an MX 400 with a shorter cable for the remote control of the iRivers. I find that the $2 RS foamies really enhance the fit of the MX 400s, which also improves the sound.

My first iriver came with some rebranded cresyn (sp?) buds. My second iriver came with Senn MX300. And my third(replacement for 1st) came with Senn look a likes. They say iriver on them. Sound like I just described and look like the MX400 RC but with a gold plug.

So I guess they change the supplied buds once in a while. Good to hear they're suplying real MX400s now.

I think it interesting to note that the (2003 & 2004) Kenwood portable CD players come with seemingly Senn earbuds too.

Mine had earbuds shaped nearly exactly like the mx x00's, and they sounded somewhat similar indeed. Maybe a tad better bass and highs, but the mids were less convincing.

Well, I bought mine for CAD$25 at the Canadian RadioShack. The bass is lacking, but the non-fatiguing highs are very nice. I used to have these $10 Philips buds, and listening for more than 1 hour would make my ears hurt!

Although now I listen primarily with the hd497's, and use the mx400's for portable use, the lacking bass isn't a problem.

MX400 = lacks of bass but good for a certain kind of music. Its pretty annoying whenever Im listening to bassy music, the bass almost absent.

I have the MX500's, which seem to be the MX400's with an inline volume attenuator. I got them for $16 at newegg.com and still use them even though I have the ATH-CM7's. The CM7's are superior to them in every way sonically, but I find the MX500's significantly more comfortable. It's strange. I'm a pretty small person and I keep reading these are too big for people. Perhaps I have Senn-spec ears. When my ears get sensitive (not that often, but still...), I use the Senn's. Everytime I got back to them, it seems, I expect them to sound like he11, but then I find myself just enjoying the music. No, they're not audiophile 'phones, but they are THE deal for casual, inexpensive and worry-free enjoyment of your portable music. Way to go, Sennheiser! You should be proud of the 'lowly' MX line.

Are the RS somehow better than the included stock foamies?

I just noticed RS carries an interesting silicone replacement pad as well for earbuds.

Ratshack foamies are thicker than the stock foamies, so i guess it makes the bud have more bass because of the thickness.

I personally don't find the MX400 particularly impressive, although I suppose they are for the price. I find using a bit of EQ can make a world of difference though. The PX-100s on the other hand are just amazing for their price, and SQ that is good enough for any non-analytical listening (i.e. they are fun).
