I have just ordered a NAD M51 DAC and unfortunately it does not have a headphone out. I will have to use the unbalanced RCA output (XLR output to powered speakers Adam A5x's).
I need a new pair of heaphones, my Sennheiser HD 515's need replacing.  Will a pair of HD 650's on RCA outputs work?

No - you really need a proper headphone output and not an unbalanced line out.
 
I went for the Grace m903 which is not only a soperb DAC it also has a great headphone amp. and a proper monitor controller for the active monitors.
