Obviously there is more to sound-signature than this, but if you had to say the HD650 emphasized one area of the frequency spectrum would you say it was the bass or the mids?

Upper bass, lower mids, mids, upper mids, lower treble.

For those who own the HD650, would you say the sound is focused on the bass or the mids?

I would say these headphones show case the mids more. I have compared these against the HD600 before and the bass is definitely more apparent but it is the mid/upper bass that is emphasized. I feel this helps to focus the mids and vocals even more. These qualities make the HD650 sound great for vocal songs.
 
I feel that these headphones don't hit that low, impacting bass notes though and that is why they do not handle certain genres (EDM) as well as other headphones. (HD600 has less bass emphasis but definitely handle EDM better compared to the HD650 imo). Other opinions may vary though.

These headphones are definitely mid-centric.  They have weak bass and treble.
