Sennheiser HD600

From the FS forum? Considering a new one would go for $300 from Amazon, I'd estimate somewhere between $200 and $275 or so. An HD580 modified with HD600 grills and HD650 cable (which, modified, is exactly the same as the HD600 except for the paint job) usually goes for somewhere betwen $160 and $200.

The HD580 is probably one of the best deals out there, and there's really no reason to go for the HD600 over it, unless you're terribly wanting the nice HD600 box. Or just can't find an HD580. (They're more scarce these days than they used to be. WTB threads can work...that's how I got mine.)

the hd600 from what I remember is a little more refined than the hd580 but they have a very strong resemblance. the 580s might actually be better for those that want slightly less veil

The HD600 and HD580 are pretty much the same headphone. So much the same that to me they are essentially the same, even considering a stock HD580 with the plastic grill compared to the HD600. I own both the HD580 (stock) and the HD600 (with HD650 cable). I'd be hard pressed to successfully tell the difference in a blind listening test if both headphones have the same pads. The biggest difference between them will be when one has a more worn pads than the other. But then you're listening to differences due to pads and how close the drivers are to your ears.

If you're shopping around used I'd take a HD580 with new pads over an HD600 with well worn pads, or factor in the cost for replacement ear pads to the cost of the headphone.

The HD650 cable is nice because it has a larger connector (the connectors that plug into the ear cups). That makes for a more secure fit for the cable and makes it less likely that the signal will cut out due to the cable connector losing contact. But buying a HD650 cable after the fact is cheap. Under $13 now from Sennheiser USA online. I don't hear a difference in sound quality between the stock HD580/HD600 cable and the HD650 cable other than the fact that the connector is less likely to cut out (and that's a big plus).

All FWIW from an HD580 and HD600 owner who is apparently deaf because he can't hear the difference between them. Both my HD580 and HD600 are over 10 years old. New more recent HD600 headphones may or may not be different.

Which one is most worth my money? From what we have discussed so far, I feel sennheiser hd580 is more bang for the buck.
since sennheiser hd580 is currently only selling for 140. while sennheiser hd600 is selling for 240, 100 more dollars. And then the sennheiser hd650 is around 280-300. These are used prices.

I'm still struggling between which one to get, since sennheiser 650, from what they say, is the "king" of headphones. Given its appealing looks, and the sound quality, I really don't know whether I should get them. The sennheiser hd580 seems to be a better choice however...

I wouldn't get the hd650 unless you like moar bass, or unless you are going to get a really nice (expensive) amp to drive them. The HD600 will be the more versitile headphone. I do think that with the very very best amps available, the hd650 sounds noticeably better, but otherwise it's just a matter of how much bass and treble you want.

I seriously don't get the difference between hd600 and hd580, since many said that they cannot tell much difference after listening to both.

There is not much difference between the HD580 w/ HD600 grills (simple mod) and the HD600. The HD600s are just HD580s with better matched drivers (doesn't matter for the most part), and the enclosure is supposed be a bit better sonically; but if that is noticeable to anyone, beats me. The HD580 is still worth every dime IMHO.

The matched drivers thing only takes a slight difference with ear placement in the right and left ears anyway to sound different on both sides so the perfect matching isn't really all that important. What I like about the 580 vs the 650 and the 600 though is that the headband isn't made of brittle material that cracks as easily. Ive had my first hd580s since 1994 and the headband hasnt chipped or cracked yet. The same couldn't be said about the hd600s and 650s. I might still get some 650s though but I would have to really baby them to make them last forever. Read around and you will see what I mean about how fragile the 600s and 650s are.

The HD580 is the better deal if you can find one in good condition. Take the money you save and put it towards an amp. A better amp will get you more sound quality improvement than an HD600 or even HD650 compared to the HD580.

I have owed the HD580, HD600, and HD650. While many say the HD580 and HD600 sound similar I found the HD580 to be noticeably darker sounding. The HD600 uses a more modern frame construction that suppresses vibrations better than the older HD580. While the HD650 did have a bit more resolution than the HD600, I found the HD650 to be too dark for my tastes. Therefore of those three my preferences were with the HD600.

Is your 580 the one with the black material around the drivers? I have those and the ones with the silver ones. Too bad I cannot directly compare them right now because the drivers are already damaged on the old 580s.

In regards to the comment regarding the 580s sounding darker than the hd600s, that is not what I hear at all. Granted I used the equinox cable on the hd600s... the 600s were thicker and darker sounding than my hd580s. In fact, I sold the hd600s because they became too dull sounding and lacking in bite. The hd580s are actually a little bright if I were to nitpick.
