Hello Head-Fi; I am looking to use my HD598 for snowboarding but the stock cable that comes with it is too long and has a chunky 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter. In addition the cable has no volume control which is a must since I don't want to bother people with my music on the chair lifts.  So I was looking to get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter and plugging that into a inline potentiometer without degrading audio quality.  Prior experiences with a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter led to mono output and less than desired audio quality.  So help me Head-Fi to search for quality components and rep Senns on the mountain because there are too many people using Dre Beats and Skullcandies.

Terrible, terrible idea. The HD598 is a very open can. You'll be hearing everything outside more than the music. The HD598 is bulky, prone to slip and slide out of position as you move... just what the hell are people thinking these days?

Audiophile headphones into the cold +snow? They leak so much sound in and out, that I doubt you can hear any details in the music without turning it so loud it would destroy your hearing. You can always strap the long cable though, and get a smaller stereo 3.5mm adapter.

Alright I won't ruin my HD598.  I don't really use it and I think it looks beautiful but I forgot how much ambient sound can be heard from an open pair of headphones; I would hear more wind than music if I did take these up to the mountain.  I'll sell the Senns and get something closed like the ATH-M50.

What's the big deal? It should be no problem. I climbed Mount Everest with my SRH-940. In fact, if it wasn't for the SRH-940 I probably would not have made it all the way.

IMO ATH-M50s, Beyerdynamic DT770PRO are great choices since they are both built like tanks.

The M50 will really be a great value headphone. With a little more to spare, you can consider the Pro700 anniversary. Nice headphone worth keeping.

I've found my HD598 works well for synchronized skydiving, but not as well as my AD700. The Audio Technicas are a little more comfortable and don't require an adapter. You might also consider Stax.

why not get something like IEM? I feel like no matter how secure the circumaural/supra-aural is, it will move around while snowboarding. Or stop blood circulation to your brain... lol
plus what if you fall? haha or maybe you are too pro?
