I just Purchased a pair of HD280s for my studio. So far, I think they are nice studio monitors given their sound isolation qualities and flat response. Now since I can get the 580s for 125 shipped, I'm thinking of returning them and going for the 580s. Being an open air design, can I use the 580s for studio monitors? Or, will I be better off staying with the 280s since they do have good noise isolation properties. Also, the 280s sound pretty good with my ipod. Will the 580s work with my ipod? I know I can't have everything I want with just one pair of cans, but given my situation which will be the best bet?

I've read that even though mixing through headphones is ok for the short term, you're eventually gonna have to run them through actual studio monitors (and other sources) to get the real "picture" of whatever you're recording. If you will also be tracking, I suggest you keep the 280s as they leak very little sound that'll get into the mics, and they're supposed to be the best isolating headphones - a huge help when recording drums.

i think the 280's would prove to be better for monitor'ing stuff. isolation is good too, the hd580's are open... but you knew that =)
