Old guy here, too. (73)
Depending on why you sold your HD800 headphones, there are a bunch of answers. I started with HD800, did a modification, sold them and got HD800s. (Nice BTW, but at the top of your price range.) Since then I've had Audeze, Abyss, and Meze. Meze 109 Pro is my current phones.
I recommend the 109 Pro. Audeze LCD-2 Classic have a nice sound but are heavy. LCD5 has a nice sound and are not too heavy, but too expensive. I didn't like the Abyss Diana for some reason.
In you stated price range, Sennheiser HD650, another HD800, find a HD800s. There are all kinds of Audeze if you want to try planar, you will have to deal with weight. Meze 109 Pro.
I'm sure there's a bunch more. Have fun.
650’s won’t do the bass. Best headphone I’ve heard under $2500 is the HFM HEK Stealth - $1399. Lower down are the HFM Arya - Stealth, also Ananda Stealth. If you’ll do used there is a lot of options.

the meze 109 pro are fantastic headphones with a wide soundstage. which i had a balanced cable for them
They get a little soft under 60 Hz, a bit too full from 100-300 hz, pretty big dip at 2k. They seem like budget ZMF’s to me which lots of people like.
