Just sold my Sennheiser HD 800. Used them for around 10 years. Looking for a new set of headphones for around 500-1k
Mostly listen to rock music. I sorta an old man. Ok I'm an old man. like bass but not too much. Not wire less and no volume limiter on them like my wireless. On the Senn's I didn't like the large cups. Maybe closed backs but open to open backs.

Thanks
Peter

Have you heard the AKG K701? If you haven't, they are bass light on lower volume, but it goes deep and is detailed and on higher volumes, it sounds balanced with everything else. I got them for like $106 new on Thomann Music after Euro to USD conversion. They're an old model like the HD 650 and DT 880, but they don't have to envy anything from my newer headphones. They sound very wide and focused, and show enough depth to separate layers.

They are not very sensitive, so something powerful is needed to make them sing. Otherwise, they sound too bright. Out of my Schiit Asgard, they sound amazing. I have the HD 8XX, and those sound fuller and less bright, but the K701 present the littlest details more clearly. I dodged them for years due to reviewers saying they don't image precisely, but that hasn't been my experience at all. Also, soundstage is very wide but not as unnaturally wide as some people say.

Old guy here, too. (73)
Depending on why you sold your HD800 headphones, there are a bunch of answers. I started with HD800, did a modification, sold them and got HD800s. (Nice BTW, but at the top of your price range.) Since then I've had Audeze, Abyss, and Meze. Meze 109 Pro is my current phones.
I recommend the 109 Pro. Audeze LCD-2 Classic have a nice sound but are heavy. LCD5 has a nice sound and are not too heavy, but too expensive. I didn't like the Abyss Diana for some reason.
In you stated price range, Sennheiser HD650, another HD800, find a HD800s. There are all kinds of Audeze if you want to try planar, you will have to deal with weight. Meze 109 Pro.
I'm sure there's a bunch more. Have fun.

Meze 109 or HD820? what was the difference between 800 0r 800s. What about HiFiMan?

Just order and will try them out.

that doesn’t work for rock. Internet randos have failed 🤣 that’s multiple levels of downgrade from 800

You should definetly check LSA hp2 or JM audio xtc headphones . There is pretty nothing under $1500-$2000 that can touch them .
