Sennheiser HD 600 vs 660s for someone that likes 650/6XX

Like @Monsterzero said get an OTL tube amp like a Bottlehead Crack or Schiit Valhalla (great pairing with 6XX) to go with your 6XX and enjoy. I'm saying this as an owner of the 58X, 6XX, 600, and 660s.

An OTL tube amp will truly bring out the best of any of the HD600 family to the point you may not feel the need to upgrade after that. If you do feel the need to upgrade in the future as budget allows I also recommend looking at several models of ZMFs (since you like the HD600 family type sound). The OTL tube amp will be a great match for those also. Just my dos centavos as a fellow enthusiast of the HD6XX/650.

Looking at graphs, the 58X has a different sound signature from the 660s. Also, reviewers say the 660s are still higher sound quality and more resolving than the 58X and they do indeed use different drivers.

I will say, I love my 660s. They’re just perfect. From the moment I first heard them, to now. I just melt whenever I’m using them.

Watch Zeos’ 660s review :)

Watch Zeos’ 660s review :)

Zeos reviewed the 660s and said they were better than the 600s and then he reviewed the 58X and said they were basically the 660s and was complaining about he wasted $500 of his own money: Z Reviews: HD 58X

He discovered this by removing foam from the 58X and not adding anything. The 58X are $150 and at that price I'm willing to buy another pair and try the mod on my own rather than spend $300-$500 on the 660s.

With my Sennheisers HD600 and HD6XX, I remove all foam, install mesh to replace earside foam, install Custom Cans UK cnc-milled backweight. Clarity, immediacy abounds!

You can't turn a 58X into 660s like that. The 58X are not the same drivers. It's not like Sennheiser took the 660s drivers, stuck a piece of foam on them and called them $150.

Z reviews is not a reliable source of information, every one of his reviews and comparisons have been way off the mark for me. prolific =/= reliable
Agreed. I do enjoy his reviews as they are entertaining but he's not the best at describing sound and technicalities.
