Besides the HD 650 (some disagree), what headphone would be a noticeable upgrade? Budget is $500. I have no preference between open or closed.

Q701, but it's just not as warm and some may not like this and it depends on preference.

I think the K601 is closer to the HD-598 sound, but they don't really sound alike.

You can also try the ATH-AD2000, but it's a bit hard to find.

Denon D5000? Electronics Expo still has them "new-open box" for $400.

Like "nikp", we must know what you like in the HD598 and what are your genre of music to propose you other headphones.

There is a lot of headphones in the 500$ price range that are technically better than the HD598.

But if you like a relatively bright headphone like the HD598, i m not sure that you ll like the HD650. In the open and 400-500 price range, the pro2900 could be an excellent choice.

I listen to almost any genre, but I tend to gravitate towards electronic and rock. My main issue with the 598 is the bass, of which I find a bit lacking. I like the general isolation of most closed headphones, but I love the sound stage of my 598. Maybe something semi-open/closed?

The pro2900 could be an excellent choice imo but has a slighlty smaller soundstage.

Hifiman he-400 .... Not much review about them (yet) , but an affordable and relatively easy to drive orthodynamic , why not ?
They seem intended for mainstream music (some emphasis on the bass ... ).

I own both and the 650 has a warmer, fuller bass than the 598, but depending on the amp,
you can get pretty good bass out of the 598.   I'm using a Headroom Supreme and with
just a dab of eq (about 1.2 db from 30 to 100hz)  they do a nice job.
Hibuck...

I made a similar jump going from the HD 595s to the HD 650s last year.  Just as a disclaimer, if you are expecting a drastic change, you will be disappointed.  Chances are good whatever you get will be preferable in most situations, but it will be difficult to find something that's always better at everything than the 598s to a degree that is instantly noticeable.  I have not heard most of the cans being recommended to you, but I will say this: If you are leaning towards the HD 650s you mentioned in your first post, I would wait for the price to come down (currently $499.95 on Amazon).  I got mine for $350 new from Amazon, and I would say they were worth it, but that would change at the $500 price point.
