I've had the HD580 for years now but always hooked it up to my Creative sound card and thought that was the end of it. I've never considered amps or anything else to "improve" the sound quality. Well, I just did a search and found our that I've been missing out.

Is there any guide that gives recommendations for using the HD580 to its full potential? And being a college student, price is a concern!

Thanks,

It's really going to depend on your budget, that way we can find you the best source/amp etc...

Get a better source (soundcard or standalone), decent amp, and a cable upgrade. The search shall become your friend, specifically in the amps, pc-as-source, h.phones, and cable forums. There are a lot of nice reviews as well.

The Chaintech AV-710 is supposed to be much better than any Creative card and the Emu 0404 is supposed to be much better than the AV-710. I haven't heard the AV-710 or the 0404. I have an Emu 1212m which is supposed to be comparable in quality to the 0404 (albeit more expensive). I can vouch for the 1212m being better than the audigy.
So, I'd suggest going for the 0404 and picking up an amp with what you have left which should be about $100. I'd even consider going used to get more bang for your buck.

Zemo has a stock of new 0404s that he's selling for $85 plus shipping, might want to PM him.
