I have a pair of on 558s with the stock cable.

Now the, single-sided, stock cable is a 2.5mm (mini) TRRS to 6.35mm (1/4") TRS.

I understand that for balanced audio, all you need is two hot wires for each channel (left and right) and to obviously connect to a balanced amp and source.

If I were to get a 2.5mm TRRS to dual 1/4" TS or dual XLR cable, would that make it balanced or not? Is the wiring inside the cans not incompatible of being balanced? Am I just missing something?

If it's not capable of being balanced, what's the point of the 2.5mm TRRS connector on one end of the stock cable?

Honestly I really doubt that the TRRS cable is set up for balanced. You can use a normal 2.5mm trs to 3.5mm trs cable for these cans.

Save balanced for high end dual entry headphones

I bet their might of been plans for some sort of microphone attachment but this is just pure speculation.

Actually remembering back i believe someone said they had to resolder both grounds with the stock cable. So possible but I wouldnt bother. I guess if you were inclined to do so butcher the stock cable and connect a mini xlr or just connect it to an amp.
