Uh, question.

Why do you want to get one of two bad-sounding pairs of headphones?

I mean, look at the HD490; if you want a good, cheap, balanced open headphone, get the Koss KSC-35. If you want a good, cheap, balanced, closed headphone, get the Philips HP550.

Just because the model numbers are similar dont mean they sound the same; for example, the 490 and 500 suck, whereas the 495 kicks ass.

So, like, once we realize that a headphone sucks, we don't buy it.

*winks*

I've heard the Sony MDR-7502 - it has no bass and no treble whatsoever; the midrange (especially the lower mids) dominates the sound from the MDR-7502, not to mention that the 7502's efficiency is just mediocre for portables. The Sennheiser HD 490 is very dark-sounding (read: very boomy bass, woolly mids and grainy highs), and too inefficient for portable use.

Old post, but since the MDR-7502 is still sold, thought I'd add to the public knowledge. I've had both the MDR-7506 and 7502 models. Don't know what happened to the 7506's over the years, but I still have the 7502's.

Sony MDR-7502 Bottom line: build quality excellent, Sound quality: zero bottom end, extremely detailed, not for extended pleasure listening. Useful for transcribing and editing, not so much for final mixing as you can't tell what the bottom end will sound like. I have IEM's that have a more liquid sound with a better bottom end.

I just got my new 7502's :)

compared to the 7506's these are much less bassy.
I sold the 7506 because they had too much bass for my tastes, especially when trying to "monitor" stuff, or just listen for long periods.
I like my HPs accurate. and these (7502) are pretty much that.

I don't like extra bass, so they are OK for me.

I think about selling my HE-400s now. Yeah, you may call me crazy now :)

BTW
Listening to Arctic Moon - Cyberpunk,
The bass is just fine.
