I have an affinity for the HD series. I've had HD540 Reference Gold for a while, along with HD600, HD650 and HD800. Yesterday I got an HD560 Ovation II.

So now I am trying to piece together the lineage of these great headphones. Google led me to this thread, and also a Czech site which carried the following exposé. Translation courtesy of Google Translate, no fact-checking done.

Sennheiser Unipolar 2000 (1977) - better than HD530. Necessary modification.

HD424 600 Ohm (1976-1979)
HD430 600 Ohm (1980-1985)

HD540 (1985-1991) - The purity of sound, the spiritual ancestor of the HD800. They lack emotions, they have high heights.

HD540 Reference 1 600 Ohm Early production / EP / - more bass and impact (punch) than HD540 2 i than HD540 1 MP / LP
HD540 Reference 1 600 Ohm Midlle production / MP / - less bass than EP
HD540 Reference 1 600 Ohm Late production / LP / - tuned, balanced. See.link .
HD540 Reference 1 300 Ohm - 300 Ohm version was produced in 600 Ohm version
HD540 Reference 2 300 Ohm - have more bass than the first version (except HD540 Ref 1600 Ohm EP). He said he had better driver matching with Sennheiser. The second version is said to be a safe bet, some HD540 version 1 can disrupt listeners with their sound. The second version has velor ear pads, the first version with a leather ring that touched the ears, but has usually not been preserved (underneath and underneath is a white fabric). The HD540 has better space and tool deployment than HD560 2, similar purity and neutrality.

The HD540 Gold version had hand-picked drivers whose impedance fit on each other in a tolerated deviation, and perhaps more attention to output quality. It costs three times as much.

HD540 Reference 1 Gold 600 Ohm - More Power Amplifier Requirements than HD540 1600 Ohm
HD540 Reference 1 Gold 300 Ohm - reportedly playing better than HD540 1600 Ohm
HD540 Reference 2 Gold 300 Ohm

HD530 (1987) - a different drive than the HD540, the same drive as the HD560. It should be an improvement, a shift to neutrality, with a different presentation of the soundstage.

HD530 600 Ohm - light sound - emphasis on high bandwidth (a little less after changing ear
pads but still more than 300 Ohm version)HD530 300 Ohm - no light sound.Compared to HD560 1, they are supposed to have a smaller and less natural soundstage (because their ear pads are more closed). They play a little less accurately, have a softer sound, are less detailed and less airy. The bass is said to be slightly higher than in the HD560 1.
HD530 2 300 Ohm

HD560 (1989) - the latest Sennheiser headphones produced with the conviction that high end Hi-Fists prefer to listen to classical and acoustic music. They emphasize height and less bass. HD560 2 was produced in Germany and Ireland.PKSHAN puts them into the Orpheus family of headphones, which is what Sennheiser has to offer. The original earrings are velor.

HD560 Ovation 1 300 Ohm - little bass, clear height -> suitable for classical music. Natural, clean and sweet sound.High precision, sounds very realistic, has emotions.
HD560 Ovation 2 300 Ohm (1991) - more bass, warmer sound and a little covered height (veil) compared to HD560 1 and a little less detail.

HD520 300 Ohm (1989) - lower model
HD520 2 300 Ohm (1991) - lower model

HD250 Linear 1600 Ohm (1987, closed headphones) - more bass than HD540 -> suitable for modern music. Spikier height, less relaxed sound. Straight centers, more straight than HD540. Smaller soundstage than HD540. Lighter sound than HD650.The 600 Ohm version of the HD250 is said to have a softer sound than the 300 Ohm version. They were made in Germany and Ireland. The German version is said to have a fuller Wednesday and a slightly wider soundstage.
HD250 Linear 1 300 Ohm
HD 250 Linear 2 300 Ohm (1992)
HD 250 Linear 2 600 Ohm (up to 2001)

HD565 Ovation 150 Ohm (1994)

HD525 150 Ohm - lower model
HD535 150 Ohm - lower model
HD545 Reference 150 Ohm - lower model

With the advent of the HD580, headphone sound has been adapted to modern music. But according to my ears it started with the HD565.

HD580 (1993) - better vocals than HD560 1 but less refined height and bass. Return to the harsh sound of treble. Better than the newer HD580 should be the old HD580 from the 1990s from Germany.Compared to HD540 2: The HD540 2 is said to be more airy, more detailed at height, more realistic, has better timbre and more enjoyable centers, and the HD540 2 is not artificially emphasized.Compared to HD560 2: The HD560 2 is said to be more detailed, have a better sound color (timbre), and draw more into music, while the HD580 leads in instrument deployment and soundstage.Comparing to HD565: The Trivia That HD565 Smoothes, HD580

Unveils HD600 (1997) - More Open Earrings Design. Enhanced HD580. Worse dynamics and other tonality than HD560 2.

HD650 (2003) - even more emphasis on bass (renowned Sennheisier quilt at higher frequencies - bass veil).
HD800 - return to cleanliness and sterility. It is the spiritual successor of the HD540.Compared to HD540 2: the bass goes deeper, the details are more, but the musicality is missing.
HD700 - apparently unnaturally clear sound compared to natural clarity HD560 2
HD800S - an attempt to correct sterility

How was your experience with the 560 II compared with the other sennheisers?

May earn you some backlash, @Backsplash7 :)

Honestly I havnt spent much time with the HD560 II's, and none recently. My first impressions were that they lack the transparency and delicate detail of the HD540, and the even tonality of the 600. Definiately not challenging the HD800 in any area. I categorised them as good but not great, but I'll bring them to the office for a few days for a fresh perspective.

Uh oh, I knew that name would come back to haunt me 😅
That's quite interesting, there seems to be a recurring theme I keep reading on these threads where people will strongly prefer either the 540 or the 560, but less frequently do they like both equally. Perhaps the difference between them is greater than I imagine? Perhaps I will need to hear both to understand it... my poor wallet...
Looking forward to hearing your refreshed thoughts, much appreciated!
