Don't make me laugh. The 595 looks modern but do not sound as nice or feel as comfy as the old 590.

My mates with 570s listened to my 590s and walked away swearing at themselves for not spending the extra cash...

The HD 590 has recessed mids and the bass tarnishes the mids by making vocals sound too low in tone. I tried to like them, because they had their strong points, but the HD 595 are way better for most uses.

I vote 580, because it is easier to mod and change/upgrade the sound to your liking (you can do cable upgrades, grill upgrades, and other cosmetic upgrades). Whereas the 595 doesn't offer that kind of flexibility.

Just my two electrons.

Thanks for all the posts and comments. I certainly appreciate everyones help.
I ended up getting a pair of 580's and have been running them in for about 10 days now.
They were a display pair and were sold to me for under cost! Wow!
Like them a lot. My musical tastes run from Jazz (from old to avant gard, blues and classical from Bach to Bax and beyond) and so far with my Musical Fidelity X-Can v3 and basic Pioneer CD player (Rega Apollo to come) the music really "sings".

I really love the HD-580s, in my opinion none of the others listed can *touch* it. Even after going through a lot of headphones, the 580/600/650 line remains my favorite by far.

Not only are they really convincing, they have great bass and are pretty forgiving on bad recordings, so you can still have fun with your not-quite-audiophile grade recordings. They're very eclectic too, they will shine with both classical music and heavy metal if you like a laid back presentation with convincing instrument voicing and placement. They're rather comfy ad not quite as hard to drive as goes the legend...

Definitely my vote goes to 580.

if you want the highest quality of sound from these headphones, just go for 580.

Me, I've had the HD595, and now I would want it back (ah, my poor wallet).

Yes, they all need an amp. but with an amp, 580 will get much more benefits compare to 595.
