The 580 is the way to go. But, if you really want a sony get the MDR-7506. The V6 is discontinued but the 7506 is the pro version.

What about the HD 570 (or 575)...?
they cost 200DM (or ???DM) instead of the 300DM(-> HD 580)

Are the HD 57xHPs OK, too?

If there are other subs, than tell me please...
(perhaps no Grados, coz I don't get'em here)

thx

Yeah I'd agree with that about the F1's. First of all I wouldnt want to pay full retail for them ($299), and then theres the fact that they are an open design phone (on purpose, even though some critics act as if that was a mistake!) and they also have certain problems or issues specific to open designs, just like the AKG K1000. Sony made an attempt with the F1 of overcoming some of the open design issues by using what they call an 'acoustic bass lens' which maybe wasnt a grand slam home run on the success scale. Still, for extended periods in an environment that allows for it, the F1 can be enjoyable. Obviously they produce an 'open sound' which is kind of cool, though yeah, for sheer sound quality per buck there are probably better choices. I paid $180 for my F1's and they make a great work phone.

HOMBRE,

Here's a question for you to answer:

What models can you get your hands on that are made by either of these companies:

AKG
Beyerdynamic
Sennheiser

And here's another question: What will you be driving these headphones with?

And, finally: Are you wililng to buy or build a headphone amp to make these headphones happy? If you have a total budget for headphones AND an amp, what is it?

you can still order the cd1700 directly from sony from japan. of course you have to pay $395 + shipping and it takes 3 months, but you can still get it.

i got my cd1700 from eagle_driver for $150. i noticed you could get the cd3000 for about $400 too, but wanted to keep the purchase under $200 so i didn't opt for the 3000. i called sony before eagle_driver offered to sell me his. i haven't compared the 3000 vs. the 1700, but those who have say the sound isn't similar, but i do like the sound of the 1700: it is atypical of sony cans i've owned.

Just digging up this old thread...

Now I'm retracting my opinion that the MDR-CD#80 headphones are even okay. The mid-priced versions from the CD380 to the CD780 are boomy and closed-in sounding - and don't block out any outside noise, to boot! Gyah. Those Sony cans sound about the same as Sennheiser's 'crappy, overpriced' HD 500 - and worse than AKG's lowly K66! No wonder why people such as Gluegun and I REALLY hate those mid-level Sonys!!!

You can get the HD580 for 185 euros from www.meier-audio.com, Jan is around here sometimes, nice guy. Not sure how the Euro translates to marks though. And you can probably find them for less somewhere, I saw some place from England selloing them for like $80 USD equivalent, which is about the price of the Sony MDR-V6s.

Other stuff you may want to look at? Beyerdynamic DT831 possibly? Gluegun has a pair of them.

And to correct coolvij - the good sony headphones in production are the:

MDR-V6, MDR-V7506, CD3000, R-10, E-888 earbuds, and EX-70 earbuds. You might also consider the F-1s good.
