On the Senn HD 595's can someone clear something up for me?

I have read some are 50 Ohm and some are 120 Ohm

First off is one "better" than the other?

Which was the first version 50 or 120 and why did they change?

What does the Ohm rating mean to me the end user who mainly will be using them with my mp3 player soon to be with my Rio S50 mp3 player and an amplifier & home theater Onkyo system.

You'll want the 50 ohm version and more than likely that's what you'll get if you order a pair.I think Sennheiser started out with the 120 ohm version at first for the 595's.Why they changed to the lower ohm rating I dont know ? Perhaps someone more informed than I can explain. The 50 ohm models allow more amps to easily drive them.I burnt mine in with a cheapo $30 dollar jambox all the while periodically checking on them. I was surprised they actually sounded decent from such a lousy low powered source. I have not tried them on my wifes I-River tho .I can attest that they do sound better amped, however, that pretty much applies to most headphones but they sound good also un-amped. The 595's are a nice set of cans to have for less than $200.

since most of the distributors write in their description that it's 120ohm, how much is the possibillity to get an 120ohm/50ohm version?

and when i get them, how i can i test if it's 50ohm or 120ohm?

120 ohm HD5x5s would have to be pretty old stock by now. They should all be 50 ohm by now. And as far as testing is concerned, a simple 5...10€ 3-1/2 digit multimeter should do.
