hello . got my hands on hd800 for $900 used with xlr , turns out this is likely hd800s because it is black (didnt really know they were differentiated by color). this thing is in really good condition, but problem is that it says hd800 on headband and s/n in lower 1000. package didn't have any authentication cards whats so ever .

That looks more like a darker grey hue to me, not black.
That said even if the HD800 does appear darker in person out of sunlight or user photos vs product photos, the lettering is supposed to be darker, not lighter.
He could have painted those dark grey (props to getting the lettering look good), or replaced it with HD800S parts (kind of like how you can get rid of the marble blue on an HD600 by using HD650 or HD580 aesthetic plastic bits and gimbals) then your cam just made it look grey instead of the darker black the HD800S is.
My guess they are HD-800S as if some one painted a HD-800 they did a incredible job with the lettering as the lettering on my 800’s is black on the gray shell and it looks identical but in white unless it is counterfeit . I have seen both of the headband’s say HD 800 and HD 800S for the 800S’s
The serial number would mean first run 800S’s and agree with others they look more gray than black but could definitely be lighting or app used to convert the pic.

HD800S that were produced in the earlier runs indicated "HD800" on the headband. In later models, this was updated to show "HD800S" in smaller font.

Was going to say exactly this
Another surefire way to tell it's a HD800S...look inside the ear cups. Remove the liner and you should see a tiny circle inside the middle of the driver, ala Helmholtz resonator.
Picture "stolen" from headcase for reference.

Indeed. Still, this dark gray color is different that silver as found on HD 800.
