I bought a Cmoy from MisterX on [H] and I am looking to get a nice set of cans to go with it. Currently I am using a pair of Sony V300's. I am looking at the Senn HD595's, but I am also looking for suggestions on other cans in the same price range and quality. Will the Senn's sound good with the Cmoy, or should they be unamped? What would sound good with the Cmoy? I have already spent the money on it and would perfer not to upgrade the amp that quickly (my wallet and wife would be very unhappy with me). Any help would be very much appreciated.

I think it'll depend on what op-amp your Cmoy uses. I've used a 595 with a Cmoy but it used a very high resolution LM6171 op-amp, which wasn't an ideal match, sounding rather brittle and bass light. The 595 really needs a warmer feed for an ideal match, but then most of the other op-amps used in Cmoys are considerably warmer than the LM6171. Given that, there's no trouble getting the volume as the 595 is very easy to drive, even the 120 ohm version. And in my view the 595 is a brilliant sounding phone and fabulous value.

I use my HD 595s also with a micro amp and find they improve with implification - i.e. getting more impact and clearer highs. I haven't tried a cmoy though.

The Sennheiser hd595 50ohm is the easiest headphone to drive that I've owned. Even a cmoy is more than it needs, and you'll have no problems driving it.

I'm using a Shellbrook Audio Lab Maxi Moy with my 595s, mainly for watching movies. It does a nice job of rounding out the low end. Giving it a little more junk in the trunk, but still not earth shattering. Keep in mind I'm used to 2 12" NHT subs in my home theater.
