Hi, first post here, I'm looking for a can for music(any genre), movies and games(not pro-level-need-to-hear-footsteps-round-corners type stuff tho). Source is PC via Emu 1820M.
Not really fussed if open or closed. Would like decent bass but not overwhelmingly so.
Budget - under £100.

I've been thinking about the Senn HD959 and Akg K240S. I think I want the Akg more but not entirely sure if its the most suitable.

Any opinions appreciated.
Cheers.

The akgs k240s are studio headphones as far as i know. For listening, I would choose the 595's. You'll get a lot of value and they have exceptional sound quality. They may be a bit dark if you listen carefully, but you like bass so that is just fine. First time I listened to them, I went whoa! If you want the boomy basshead style headphone don't these. The 595's have decent bass but the boom effect is low.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, thats what I understand too about the AKGs being primarily studio 'phones but so are Senn HD25s etc. and how will this mean they are not good for general use?

Has anybody listened to both these 'phones and can you tell me how they differ?

Cheers.

AKG K240 is very warm. Truly a warm can. A can of warms. I had HD595 and it's very all-doer, fitting pretty much everything you feed to it. I've only heard briefly the K240 but it wasn't bad. In all the warm they are pleasant to listen to.

Don't know about K240 but HD595 does sound good unamped (although some extensions and more resolution is gained when amped).

What do you mean by warm?

As progo said, warm is actually a good word to define the K240S sound sig. It has a loose bass, laid-back highs, and smooth mids. To me, an amp is needed to improve the sound.

A HD595 performs better IMO with better controlled bass and more extension on the highs. May be lacking on bass for some people. And it sounds decent without amp.

The HD595 generally (in the US) can be almost twice as expensive as the K240S. If the price difference is not too big at your place, get the HD595.

The highs in the 240 are much more laid back than the 595... keep that in mind if you want to hear detail. Frankly I couldn't listen past the ridiculously boomy bass of the 240 on most rock recordings.

Sounds like you guys are telling me the better 'phone is the Senn in all areas.

I can get the Senn for £69 and the AKG for about £68 so unless there is something else I should consider I'll go for the HD595.

Two last Qs, what about the Equation Audio RP21 V Senn HD595?
... and is the AKG K181 DJ a definite no no?

Cheers.

RP21 and DT770/80 are both closed headphones and with both of those you'll get a better bass than the HD595. However, open headphones sounds more airy with better soundstage.

RP21 had issues with cold highs when you compare it with the HD595, but for the price (it's ~$90 in the U.S.) it sounds very good.

DT770/80 has possibly the best bass you can get for that price, but t is boosted relative to the rest of the frequency spectrum. If you love bass, you really should get this.

For pure SQ I still prefer the HD595, but some people may not agree.

The Hd595 isn't exactly bad, but boring & midfi-ish IMO. Alternatives I experienced to have more emotion and detailling are the Alessandro MS1 or the AKG K271. K240S or the Beyer DT250 might be alternatives as well, but I never tried those.

OK I just bought the DT770 Pro 80 ohm.

Should be quite a listen for me when they get here as my points of reference are an old(1990) pair of Aiwa HP-X201(quite bassy but muddy) and newish Senn PX200(clear but bass light)!
