I've got a pair of Grado SR-125s (I'd say about 4-5 years old now) that I've just re-wired. They are BEAT though. I still love the sound, but they are sorta my "drunk phones" now.

I've got Ety er4-P for portable listening.
I should have a SuperMacro V3 )or whatever Dr. Xin decides to ship out this week

) very soon.

I generally listen to Trance/techno and rock/alternative.

That said... I've been toying with the idea of picking up another set of "daily driver" headphones. I want something fun to listen to, comfortable, good sound stage, good bass, etc.

Compared to the Grados, anyone think it's worth picking up a pair of Senn HD580s? I've found the 580 for $159 (J&R). I read the review from way back when and it seems as though it'd be worth it, but any other experiences? thanks!

These are two different sounds, the Grado is "in your face" bright and fun. The Senn's are dark and airy. I can fall asleep to rock with the Senn's, but can't stop my foot tapping with the Grado's. I really like the detail and soundstage with the Senn's and use them for all types of music. Much like the ER4's that
you have, the enjoyment is more of the sound detail rather than the visceral. But, unlike the ER4, the Senn's have great punchy bass.

yeah, unfortunatly, since I got my etys, I've learned that while Grados sound great (and very "fun"), I like different sounds at different times. I think I'd really like the 580s...

I started with a set of HD 580s, and recently bought a pair of SR 225s as well. The combo is fantastic. I would HIGHLY recommend getting the Senns. They definitely have a different sound, but I wouldn't call it dark at all, especially with proper amplification (My headsave Classic does the job). I usually use the Senns for classical and Jazz, with the Grados for rock and trance, though I do a fair bit of switching. Depends on my mood and such. The 580s are definitely more comfortable. I must say. Good luck, and I don't think you'd regret the purchase.

You really should audition them first. I had Grado 225s and thought I liked them then I heard the 580s and that was that. I sold the 225s so I could upgrade the cable on the 580s. I love them. You'll want to get rid of the stock cable if you get the 580s so factor that into your budget. You may say you're not going to do that but you will.

I figured I'd want to. I just re-wired my SR-125s, I like the difference. I'd probably end up making the new cables for the Senns as well.

Turns out, I have a Sony Clie PDA that a friend of mine really really wants..... happens to correspond with the price of the HD580s...

What's the best price anyone here can find on the 580s or 600s? (so far the best I've found is $150 and $249 respectivly)? (new, not used. refurb would be okay though)

There used to be some discounted 600 on J&R for $200. Seems to be periodical, so just take your time to find a good deal. Also some new 580s on ebay for $135, which make >$200 hd600 not quite a good deal.

thanks, I forgot to mention, I'm more interested in the 580s for the price, but if I could find the 600s for under $200, they'd be the choice in a heartbeat.

So I guess the consensus is they would be a very good addition to my "collection?"

The 580s are very nice headphones, especially for the price. They will sound a lot different than the Grados, but they're very enjoyable in different ways. You'll probably hear more bass and a smoother, even warmer midrange compared to the Grados.

All a matter of preference. I use HD580s for everything. Usual advice: Listen to the people here, try out what they suggest, and then buy something that wasn't on the list that you happen to like. That's how I seem to advance, and I'm pretty happy for now.
