for great HiFi -onkyo station- when stay at home, and a unamped portable -M3L with 20 mW per channel- when stay in my beach house with no possibillity or amp or HiFI, which is better?

P.D: the 2 things are important to me, and the music i play is indie one.

I'm sure hd 595 is better, at about twice the price, it better be!

The hd555 beats the k240s for most applications, with the exception of some rock, where the k240s' groovyness brings out the spirit of the recording, even while obfuscating quite a bit of detail. Therefore if 555>k240s and 595>555 then 595>k240s!

Except for the fact that he said he primarily listens to indie... given that I think the K240 Studio would be a better choice. Either that or Grados.

Absolutely agreed here, if with the only reference of my HD595 and my K141S (fairly similar to the K240S, they say). Actually no direct comparison is possible between them. You may take it sort of like a cross-check.

Well there's like sebadoh low-fi indie, and then there's Arcade Fire high production value indie. IMO it depends more on the quality of the recording then the genre when determining which phone would be beter suited. Certainly, a crappy indie record will sound more pleasing through the k2450s. But a well recorded one should sound better through the 595 (again, basing my experiences on the hd555).

If you listen to rock more often, the AKG might be a good choice. I heard they are fun though I have no experience. To think of it, might as well go for Grados

Generally HD 595 will sound its best with proper amp. I just tube rolled my amp and was suprised to discover alot of new details and great sounding bass compared to before. Drums was very impactful and the bass lines were more prominent. I'm not sure about AKG's amplificatio needs, the 240s one I mean.

ps. The above results were tested with live music, fast pop, and ochrestral. I didn't try rock or techno. Maybe a more aggresive phone like Grados will be better. Also my material were relatively well recorded.

well, i buy this in the spanish web site redcoon.es and about a price of 200 eur.

my choices are:

senn´s hd595 120 eur
akg 240 140 eur
beyerdinamic dt660 145 eur
akg 271 studio 159 eur
and a more expensive: beyerdinamic dt860 and HD650 -185, 260 eur-

the question is that for portable i dont want to buy an external amp but i want to listend it with this headphones in places -like my beach house- with the best sounding as possible.

also in my city house with the Onlyo HiFi -in that case there is no problem of impedance-

If these prices are correct, it would be idiotic to buy the k240s. Go for the hd595, it will work fine unamped, and should improve nicely out of your reciever. (The k240s is also ok without an amp, but will improve pretty dramatically with one.)

140 eur for the k240s is ridiculous. Thats way overpriced.

Just to keep "the force" balanced, why not keep the AKG's in the running and buy from a site that is more accurately priced. Almost all sites price the K240s at $100 or less. And doesn't Headrom and TTVJ ship all over?

While you can wear any of these out of the house none are particularly portable. And if you need isolation the 271's are the only ones in this group that will offer any.

In your case, the HD 595 - you could also consider the DT440, though. The K240S will most probably not sound very good in combination with your Onkyo system, and it definitely doesn't sound ideal in combination with weakish portables. However, 2x 20 mW isn't so bad, so it might at least sound quite alright...

P.S.: Another thingy you could at least try for the beach house would be the Creative HQ-1300 (aka Labtec Elite 840). It's fairly efficient and surprisingly good for 25 Euro over here.

I'll second that. I have the Elite-840's (at Lini's recommendation) and they sound great for the price. They definitely sound better after a little burn-in (20-30 hrs minimum). I have them paired with a 75 ohm adapter and that really takes them up a class in sound.

aham, but i want the headphones for the two sources... i also have a ex71 for the portable, but i want to upgrade when i stay in a located place like the beach house.

the headphones i want mai be great for the portable and for a great HiFi system.

i supose the HD595 is the best considerer for the two situations.

I'm not sure I'd take the 595's to the beach, but that's just me. Do you have access to the Koss portables (KSC35/75)? From what I've read they would definitely sound better that you EX71's but are cheap enough (at least in the US) not to worry about on the go.
