I tried your little experiment and didn't hear the sound through my mouth. It seems possible that it could have something to do with Eustachian tubes. The sinuses in the face and head also have astounding acoustical properties. (Another experiment to try at home kids! Now try it again, but this time manipulate the sound by varying the size of the imaginary smoke ring!)
