I have an old(ish) U.S. Robotics device that transmits arbitrary audio out from my computer to my stereo. Unfortunately, it is an analogue 900 MHz signal that carries the sound, so there is significant loss of quality along the way.

I have had a few frustrating conversations with Best Buy and Linksys employees about the couple of Linksys products for transmitting audio (and pictures, and in one case video) from computer to stereo/TV.

Initially, they all claim that I can send arbitrary output from my computer to the stereo. Then, when I quote bits of the manual to the effect that `Musicmatch is the application sending the data', the renege on their affirmative answer that yes, I can send output from Winamp from my computer to my stereo.

So, and I hope this is the right place for this question, does anyone know of a product which will stream, at good quality, arbitrary audio output from a computer to another location? I couldn't care less whether it uses 802.11, or some other technology. The only two criteria I have are that it does NOT require some dedicated bit of playing software, and sound quality is high.

Try this, I just bought it and have not connected it up yet but it gets good reviews on the web...attaches to the stereo and then communicates with a PC that has a wireless connection (802.11b...it can play FLAC as well as mp3 etc)

Thanks, I didn't know about this.

However, it still seems to require sending audio through its own native application. Any other suggestions out there?

I know what NOT to do: Hook up an FM transmitter.

I fooled around with wireless for a while, and finally resigned myself to getting a nice long drill bit and hard-wiring from the sound card to the stereo. It was the only way I could figure out how to get decent sound. There are probably better ways to do it, but that's how I did it.

You'll love this gadbet. I have the old, which doesn't have wireless, but it works extremely well with the wired connection. Once you rip all your CD's, they are all just -there- anytime you like. I think this is miles ahead of the "airtunes" that Apple just released. The slimp3 also support multiple streams from a single server to multiple sources. If you open the correct ports in your firewall (you do have one, right?) you can control your music collection over the web and stream your own music collection to yourself at work.

The other point is that this is a techo-dweebs delight, while still get high "spouse approval".

Except for Etys and PPA, best audio device I've purchased in years.

Thanks for all the feedback. However, I was hoping this thread could lead me to a device with the functionality I described in the first post.

I just found this.

There are various claims made here and at the product website, found here, such as:

"Digital Audio Transmission at full CD Quality"

"By transmitting the audio in a digital format, the 2.4 GHz Digital Wireless Audio Transmitter / Receiver from Amphony allow you to eliminate the hassle of wires and give you absolute freedom while maintaing crystal-clear audio quality."

I guess they're claiming that the only signal loss you will get is at the analog connections to the transmitter and from the receiver.

Has anyone tried a 2.4 GHz dedicated audio transmitter? Any thoughts? If the claims are true, it is exactly what I am looking for, and affordable at $129.

yeah that would be using a small java applet. Anyway though, per your needs, I would say see if you can find a Turtle Beach Audiotron, they have been discontinued, but they are quite nice. My boss got one and it works very well for that purpose, it is ethernet based so you would need a WiFi Bridge, but overall, not a big deal. What is nice is that it runs a web interface for you to manage playlists etc. Be careful with some of the devices as they are dependant on being hooked up to a tv to display menu information. While that can be slick, it can also be a nuisance if you don't want your tv on etc.

Try This I just brought this device it is call Widio http://www.widio.com. It is using 2.4GHz technology. It can be connected to headphoe or active speaker. It has 7 selectable channel on the Transceiver so you can use it alone it with your wireless LAN or other 2.4GHz device. I use it for about a month now. And I like it so much. The reason I brought it is becasue its audio quality, its transmitting distance, and outlook.
