Hi all,

My current desktop audio is using
Cambridge Soundworks - Desktop Theater DTT2500 Digital Speakers.
Like in: https://www.cnet.com/products/cambridge-soundworks-desktop-theater-5-1-dtt2500-speaker-system-for-pc/specs/

However, the receiver head unit is now broken or not working again, Therefore, I want to replace it with https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/all-tv--home-entertainment/sherwood/sherwood-rd6506b-5-1-channel-av-receiver/71665/ will it be working ?

The cable for input from my PC or iPhone is using 3.5mm cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks.

The Cambridge used an intergated amplifier built into the main unit, which powered the sub-woofer (as well as the 5 other speakers)
Where as the Sherwood, like most receivers, is designed to work with a self-powered sub-woofer.
Also some of those intergated 5.1 audio systems use low Ohm speakers (like 4-Ohm or less), lower then what a normal receiver is designed to work with (6-Ohm to 8-Ohm?)

My two cents is to get rid of a Cambridge and start fresh.
Maybe find a good deal on a used Logitech Z5500.

If your more into getting a modern A/V receiver, Monoprice sells a 5.1 speaker set for $155.
http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090601&p_id=10565&seq=1&format=2
Maybe find a decent used receiver off Cragilist.

PurpleAngel,

Thanks for the clarification, I never knew about it before.

I've been contemplating to get one of these: http://avproductreviews.com/best-av-receivers-under-300

So if I want to keep the existing 5x satellite speakers and the 1x Subwoofer is there any way to plug it into any of the AVR above ?

Somehow I cannot find that speaker model in Australia. This is what I can find so far in my area: http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hometheater-systems/home-theater-package/yht-1810_g/?mode=model

But the problem is that it takes HDMI as the input line ?
My laptop only have one single HDMI cable for the display.

Just can't see the Cambridge beening of much use.

So run HDMI from the laptop into the A/V receiver (Yamaha or Denon), then run HDMI from the receiver into a computer monitor or TV.

@PurpleAngel,

OK, I never knew that it is even possible that way :)
That's sounds like a great idea to know that my monitor and audio can still be working like that.

Hi PurpleAngel,

I just saw: Harman Kardon AVR171S 700-watt 7.2CH Networked AV Receiver
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/296770
Code:
Seven 100-watt-per-channel amplifiers with high-performance digital power supply
Apple AirPlay, Bluetooth and Spotify Connect
HARMAN TrueStream technology
Six 3D-ready HDMI 2.0 inputs, including one with MHL and two HDMI 2.0 outputs
Dual subwoofer outputs
Multiroom system with assignable amplifier
Front-panel USB port
Compact design
Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™ decoding
EzSet/EQ III auto-calibration
HARMAN GreenEdge technology
vTuner (Internet radio) streaming
Colour-coded connectors and binding-post speaker terminals
Multidevice, programmable/learning remote control
FM/AM Tuner
Dimensions (H x W x D): 121mm x 440mm x 300mm
Weight: 5.1 kg

Does that means the old Cambridge satellites speaker and the Subwoofer can be used with the above receiver ?
