if i have a tv, a cable box, and a dvd player all with the red/white/yellow inputs (only one set for each) and the tv needs to be hooked up to the cable box for it to work, how do i get the dvd player in there?

That must be an old TV! The TV probably also has a coaxial connection, and the cable box should have a coax output, so you should be able to connect the cable box with a coax cable. You'll usually need to tune the TV to channel 3 to get the signal from the cable box. Plug your DVD player in with the RCAs, and switch back and forth between cable and DVD using the 'TV/Video' or similar button on the TV or TV remote.

If you want to connect the cable box with RCAs too, you'll need to get a switch box. Radio Shack should have something for $20-$30.

Some cable boxes use channel 4, our Comcast feed is set to channel 4.
