Customs in Italy are notorious for delay/losses. Hence why a number of ebay sellers won't ship there.
Best to buy hi-fi available in Italy where you have dealer support in case the gear goes wrong. Or take a low-cost flight to London and carry the stuff back in a large suitcase if you are spending a reasonable amount???
I'd agree with Mark on this case. It's a huge potential for everything to go wrong.
Last time I sent some electronic equipment to Italy, the guy never received it. Never again. I had the posting receipts and everything but it just never materialised in his side of the country. I ended up taking the hit, but it was really unpleasant being blamed by someone for not delivering something, which ended up being the responsibility of the Italian Post
