My current source is a modded Toshiba 3960. I'm looking for a used redbook player for under $500 that offers more (and punchy) bass with smooth, extended highs. The player is for my bedroom system, so depth is a factor. Much more than 12" deep will not work. Any thoughts or opinions out there?

Used Rega Planet or Planet2K.

Another vote for the Rega Planet 2000. I've owned quite a few players and the first one the comes to mind after reading your description is the Planet 2k. They go for $550-600 used on Audiogon. If you have a little more cash, you can swing for the Rega Apollo. Many have claimed that it's a good improvement over the Planet 2k.
