This is from both chrome and Tapatalk. It does work if I am logged out.

Maybe this is because I am a new member and not all my options are enabled?

I installed Chrome onto my phone to try and recreate this problem and I'm unable to duplicate your results. What device are you using? I've been able to try this with an iPhone, MacBook Pro and a PC. Have you tried clearing the cache and rebooting the device? The search functionality isn't something we restrict for new members because we want them to be able to find threads and join in the conversations.

I have actually been having issues with this recently(last couple months) while using chrome too. It seems like the search function randomly stops working. If I place the cursor over the search icon in the top right, it will highlight it but clicking it does nothing. The solution that I found for this is to right click on my user name, from the drop down menu next to the search icon, and open a new tab. The search function usually works on the new tab. 
 
I am guessing my problem is related to my computer or my settings but have not figured out how to fix it
