I am on my 3rd pair of SE530 (first pair was e500) and the cable has once again turned into 'wax' (stiff, shiny and brittle) and cracked in multiple places. I received the current pair in mid-late 2008. I think it has the reformulated wires, but im not sure--how can I tell? The sound in the right ear piece has now completely failed (i think the wire shorted where the wire cracked.) I purchased the e500 in august 2006 so the warranty is now over. I am thinking I will try sending them to the service center when i arrive to US in april.

I am considering doing a custom upgrade to the wires.
Any recommendations of any other upgrades/mods?
Also, what is a good source for suitable high quality wire?

You can contact EFN and see if he'd be willing to help you out with a custom. He just did a pair of SE530s beautifully, but not sure if he'll be willing to do another. Shooting him a PM couldn't hurt.

What is the manufacture date on your current pair? There is a number on the plug end of your SE530s. What is it?

there is a molded-in number (quite hard to see): 108261 and another 4-digit number. is it a serial number?

The 6 digit number must be some sort of a batch number, as mine is the same.

You want the 4-digit number. IIRC, if it ends with 08, you should be ok.

it ends with 36.

also, i just noticed another number on the same side, opposite wire as the 6 digit number-- '1'

You have the reformulated cable? How long have you had yours, any signs of stiffening?

I would try to send them back for replacement under warranty anyway. You should have received a new invoice for the new pair. Use that as the copy of the invoice for the return of your current SE530s. I'm pretty sure they'll replace them again, as it's a known defect.

Get the new 530s. Don't use them, sell them. Buy Westone 3s. ;D

The 4 digit number provides you with a date and you can get service up to and possibly passed 2 years from the production date. Provide us with the enitre number and we can tell you how much longer, if at all, you have to send it in for warranty service.

The number should be whatever is before the "SE530" label. IIRC the number shows you the manufacturing date. Mine says 2808, which I believe means 2nd day of August, in 2008. That was what I was told by the guy who I bought from, anyway.

I've had mine for over two months, and there are no signs of stiffening or cracks at all. Then again, I do clean the cord at least once a week so maybe it'd be different if I didn't clean them.

Yours were manufactured near the end of 2006 (303rd day of 2006). You do not have the reformulated cables.

Im not sure the number translates in that fashion.
I watched the service rep pull my new pair out of an actual sealed SE530 box... so there is no way this pair was manufactured in march 3, 06. (3036)

a hah. that makes sense now. So, that would mean it is the initial se530 production as that was shortly after the name change.

Oh, I see, the first three digits are the number of days in a year. Makes sense.

In that case, I wonder what the 6-digit number is, as mine and Plex's number is the same yet they're obviously not the same batch. Probably just a code for all the 530's?
