I will point out that you can typically get a rough feel for how good or poor a headphone does right out of the box. There may be some burn in and the frequency response will be a bit different then what you're used to which can be a big deal. Still some of the main characteristics should be immediate like stage presentation and sense of location of instruments and singers as well as spacing and separation. Things like cleanliness of note, dynamic range, frequency response, and transparency also show through. Frequency response will drive tonality and the type of presentation where boosted frequencies sound forward and quiet frequencies more laid back. You can EQ this or simply get accustomed to it. It will take a little while to start picking out the small details though.
