SDS, Supra, MPX tuberolling, the new global, improved thread

I did try it early on, and if I recall correctly, there was no distortion. But, I'm really tired of tube rolling, and I'm satisfied that I've now optimized the performance of my SDS/R10 system. So, I'll just sit back in my rocking chair, and simply enjoy the music.

Mike, it sounds like the problem may have been the higher gain of the earlier input tubes with the high power 6BL7s.

Did you try VT-231s as the output tubes with any of these input tubes, for example the 6414?

I have an MPX3 Slam SE and use AKG K-701s.

Hi all-

I've become quite settled on my tube selection in my PPX3 Slam 6SN7 while listening to the Sennheiser family of headphones. I recently purchased an RS-1, and am hoping I could get some recommendations for some tubes that will give the RS-1's more body and bass. They already have plenty of impact and detail!

I'm currently using a Ken Rad 6sn7 black glass, and a pair of Tung Sol 5687 d-getters. I've always been quite pleased with the sweetness the 5687s bring, so I'm thinking of maybe swapping out just the ken rad. But I'm looking to take suggestions for any tubes at all. Thanks!

... and similarly, I'm most fond of the Amperex D-getter 6922 driving the 5687s on my PPX3 SLAM

but I haven't heard a Philips nor a Mullard 6922 yet ...

I've been trying various gain tubes in front of my 5867s and cannot find
anything that will produce the sound others seem to get from this tube.
Or perhaps I need to try some other 5687s.

My problem is that there is just NO high end at all. And my ears don't go
that high in the first place. What is there is *wonderfully* smooth, silky,
etc.
If I could extend that kind of delicacy to the levels of a 6BL7, say, then I
would be very pleased indeed.

The 5687s are the stock ones that came from SP: Sylvanias.
Has anyone else noticed a lack of highs with this tube?
I've tried: 6414s and {6,8,12}SN7s. I have the ECC1 adapter, so that
family is available.

Thanks all,

Thanks!
Tube Depot has some with black and some with bronze plates. Is there
preference between the two?

thanks,

I agree. The stock 5687s from SP are weak in the highs and the lows. The Tung Sol D-getters are better. I like the RCA bronzeplates best.

I think I'm going to be in a minority here but after extensive tube rolling with 5687,ECC1 and ECC2 and 2c51 adaptors I still prefer the TS roundplate round mica 6SN7.The 2c51 does have the advantage of a bigger soundstage but doesn't have the smoothness of the old time 6sn7.

Also I actually prefer the 6sn7 as output as well, with the 5687 or 6BL7 (although my amp is does not have a higher voltage setting for this tube) I notice a little harshness to the sound and my primary concern is smoothness.

No doubt the 6sn7 is still very much a viable tube choice, whether it is for input, or outputs. Of output selections for the MPX I still prefer the 6bl7's run at 400 volts, with the 6sn7's (run at 300 volts) being my second choice. I find I rarely opt for the 5687's for output duty. For the input I prefer the 6sn7, or equivalent, most of the time. I find I turn to the 12xx7 (ECC1) family of tube occasionally, but this choice is highly "headphone / recording" dependant. The 12xx7 family does provide a faster, more detailed sound, but I find my personal preference runs more to a "fatter" more full bodied sound than the 12xx7 family can provide.

Currently I am trying to decide if I should get an adapter for the 2c51, or just be content with what I have. Will probably wait and see if I can get a sense of this tube at the upcoming international meet in San Jose.

Guys,
I sent my amp in 2.5 weeks ago to get a repair, thanksfully, it is still under the 7 years warranty. Anyway, I went ahead and get the pre-amp option. Mikhail went an extra mile and select another tube combination for my R10, and according to him it sounds "perfect". I got the amp back yesterday and couldn't be more happy. The combo is Sylvania 6BL7GT as output and a small GE tube for the driver. There is no tube number on the GE but I will call Mikhail to find out more today.

I'm not sure which stock 5687s you are referring to. When I bought a PPX3 Slam, Mikhail sent it with a pair of TS D-getters and a pair of TS O-getters.

I'll bet the small tube is a 2c51.

Nope!! The tube is GE 12AY7A. This small tube fits in the 6414 adapter and has more natural presentation with warmer and full bodied sound than my Raytheon 6414. It also has similar bass response incomparison to the 6414. This is the first time Mikhail tried this tube with his amp.

The 5687s he sends are whatever he has on hand at the time. So it varies.
