No, I think he has a point, what he means is actually sitting down and listening to the music with zero distractions, eyes closed/lights off even, taking it all in.

Whereas those that have computer rigs etc etc are using the music as "involving background noise" but theyre actually paying more attention to what else theyre doing rather than the music, occasionally taking a moment to concentrate on one's favourite guitar solo etc etc

LOL...what is the logic on that statement man!!!!....What about do not rip, and listen many as well, I do all the time....cheap, simpler, more convenient for me, and no hassle...

About the songs you do not like, just program the Cd player not to play them, and period, most of them support that feature, and store in memory a lot of CDs....

I've been a big fan of PC-as-source for quite a few years now. I route one monitor onto my coffee table, pull over the mouse and then just kill the lights. It's also great for video games. Plug in the cordless Logitech and fire up the emulators or what have you.

cool man. music is all about enjoying it. basking in its beauty. we figit so much with "is this better than this" etc. etc. we forget to just enjoy it. PC audio is all about convienience.

Also PCs make a lot more noise, physically talking, my antec fans on the PC, are heard all along the room, and I ahve 4 of them on it, I have not heard a completelly silent yet, yes you can place them in a nother room or closet aslo, but anyway.....

i feel your pain on the ripping issue. i only have perhaps 50 cd's right now

as i've just started buying music again, and had my previous cd collection completely stolen from me out of my car (and that would have been super nice if i had it all on my PC in FLAC, i'd still have that music).

however, i think your other fears are very dealable. as far as noise i found it very easy to turn my pc into completely inaudable and it's sitting right next to me. it certainly doesn't have to be expensive or difficult. i'm moving appartments and because of desk-space i'm hoping to put my pc in the closet along with my xbox360, just run a few cables to my desk: vga monitor, usb hub, and perhaps that's it. i have wireless kbm that will work fine from the closet. right now i have my fans fully turned down with zalman fanmates and it's inaudible from where i sit; in the closet i'll have them going much faster because of closet-heat, but then of course their in the closet. anyway, i'm sure you can manage to quiet your pc if you want to.

however, i can understand that ripping 1600 cd's sounds like an insurmountable proposition. i really don't know if i'd go with a pc-system if i was in your shoes. that's a lot.

that is NOT fair. i certainly don't fit that description. i have my pc system at my desk, but at the other side of the room i have my comfy recliner, and my headphones have an extension cord. though i often listen while at my desk, i spend quite a bit of time JUST LISTENING as well. having a pc-system or cdplayer has nothing at all to do with that, and there's no cause to make that generalization. think about it. it's a bit ludicrous.

heck, it's all digital folks. if we were talking turntables VS digital formats now that would be an actual issue. but sheesh, it's all digital data converted to analog by a DAC, amplified by an AMP, a cdplayer really isn't that different from a computer. c'mon.

but you don't have to switch discs every time you want a new album. that's what he's saying. "listen many" (without switching discs).

and yeah, but you can't just listen to tom petty, then want to hear a neil young riff, then decide you'd rather listen to pearl jam. if you say you'd NEVER want that i find that a bit illogical. i respect the "put in the disc, listen to the WHOLE album" mantra, but isn't it a tad fatalistic?

Click and lean back and listen to a whole album.

Or click a playlist and surf the net.

Computer as source for me.

Quoted for truth. I finally ripped all of my CDs to hard drive .flacs a couple weeks ago and set up a very simple foobar interface for them. I now realize a couple things about my CD collection:

1) I own about 50 CDs. A couple weeks ago, I would have estimated my collection to be 20 or 25!

2) Making one click to start a random play on a playlist, one click to select a specific album, or two clicks to select any song in my collection with little or no scrolling involved is a lot more convenient than searching through random drawers trying to remember where I put that Eric Clapton CD.

And yes, some of us spend a lot more time working (playing) at a computer than just listening to music, which is probably as big of a factor in who prefers computer as source as anything else.

As a followup, I had a mini eargasm today. I've been mainly listening with my HD650's through my modded SHA-1. But I wanted to try a different set of cans today, but forgot that everything was at work. My usual home-backup cans being the SR-225, and HD25-1. So I only had one other set of cans left, the HP-2. And I was thinking, well, why not, I might as well give it a go. Previously I had given up on the HP-2s because they were too uninvolving, and neutral for my tastes. But for some reason, after plugging them into the SHA-1, I was like, WHOA, they never sounded like this before!!

I don't know if it was the lack of synergy between the 333ES and the SHA-1, or if it's just the really good synergy between the AV710 and the SHA-1 and the HP-2. Wow. Even my fiancee could tell. She was hesitant to try on the different headphones, because she said, "I can't hear the things you hear.." But between the two headphones she says, "Well the [HD650] sounds so far away, and the [HP-2] sounds clearer."

Anyways, wow. I gave up on the HP-2 too quickly.

I think I need to get another pair of Grado headphone extension cords... so that once I'm married my now-fiancee can listen with me. hm. I wonder who's going to get to listen to the HP-2's? haha!

Sigh. i need to get another pair of flats too.. Maybe I'll get a pair of flats, and add a pair of GS-1000's... Tee hee!
